## Overview

The Algarve is Portugal's sun coast — 150 km of honey-coloured cliffs, sea caves and golden coves, 300 days of sun, and a laid-back, good-value Atlantic version of the Mediterranean. The west is wild and dramatic (Lagos, Benagil's cave, the Ponta da Piedade), the centre is the golf-and-resort triangle (Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo), and the east is quiet lagoons and sandbar islands. Grilled sardines, €3 wine, and a 7-hour flight from Toronto: it's the easiest European beach week there is.

## At a glance

- **Best time to visit:** May to June and September to early October are ideal — 23–28°C, sunny, the sea warming to 19–22°C, and the resorts open but not full.
- **How long to stay:** Five to seven on the coast. Three nights west (Lagos/Carvoeiro) and three or four centre or east covers the best of it without rushing.
- **Budget:** $90–140 USD/day (a guesthouse in Lagos or Tavira, grilled-fish lunches for €12, a small rental car).
- **Getting there from Canada:** Fly into Lisbon (LIS) nonstop from Toronto (YYZ) on Air Canada or TAP (~7h), then either a 45-min TAP hop to Faro (FAO) or a 2.5–3h drive down the A2.

## Best time to visit

**May to June and September to early October** are ideal — 23–28°C, sunny, the sea warming to 19–22°C, and the resorts open but not full. **July–August** is hot, busy with European families, and the best coves are elbow-to-elbow by 11am; still a great family window if you book early. **March–April and late October** are mild (18–22°C), green and cheap — good for golf, walking and Lisbon combos. **Winter** is 15–17°C and quiet; many beach restaurants close.

## Budget

**Budget:** $90–140 USD/day (a guesthouse in Lagos or Tavira, grilled-fish lunches for €12, a small rental car). **Mid-range:** $250–400/day (a 4-star cliff hotel in Carvoeiro or Lagos, a boat trip, a round of golf). **Luxury:** $600–1,500+/day (Vila Vita Parc, Conrad Algarve, Pine Cliffs, Quinta do Lago villas, Six Senses Douro is elsewhere — here it’s Anantara Vilamoura for the full resort experience). Portugal remains the best-value luxury in Western Europe.

## Getting there

**Fly into Lisbon (LIS)** nonstop from **Toronto (YYZ)** on Air Canada or TAP (~7h), then either a 45-min TAP hop to **Faro (FAO)** or a 2.5–3h drive down the A2. Faro also has nonstops from many UK and European cities for connections. From Faro it’s 30 min to Vilamoura, 50 min to Carvoeiro, 1h to Lagos, 35 min east to Tavira. Pre-book a private transfer or collect a rental at the airport.

## Getting around

**Rent a car** — the beaches, cliff walks and villages are spread along the coast and the regional train is slow. Roads are excellent, you drive on the right, and the A22 motorway uses electronic tolls (ask the rental company to add a transponder). Lagos, Tavira and the resort villages are walkable once you’re there. Boat trips and the Seven Hanging Valleys walk are car-plus-feet days.

## Quick facts

- **Airport:** Faro (FAO); Lisbon (LIS) + drive or hop
- **Currency:** EUR (Euro)
- **Language:** Portuguese; English widely spoken
- **Time zone:** GMT+0 (WET, +5h from Toronto)
- **Plugs:** Type C/F, 230V (adapter needed)
- **Visa (Canadians):** Schengen: 90 days visa-free for Canadians
- **Tipping:** 5–10% at restaurants; not obligatory

## Where to stay

- **Lagos & the west** — The most beautiful coastline — Ponta da Piedade’s rock arches, Praia do Camilo and Dona Ana coves, a lively old town with a real food scene. — best for: first-timers, couples, scenery
- **Carvoeiro & Benagil** — Cliff-top villages above the Benagil cave and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail; Vila Vita Parc and smaller cliff hotels. — best for: boat trips, hikers, luxury cliff stays
- **The Golden Triangle — Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo** — Golf courses, marinas, gated villa estates and the Conrad, Anantara and Pine Cliffs resorts. Manicured, convenient, 25 min from Faro. — best for: golfers, families, resort weeks
- **Tavira & the east** — A pretty riverside town with a Roman bridge, the Ria Formosa lagoon and ferry-only sandbar islands (Ilha de Tavira, Culatra). Quiet and authentic. — best for: slow travellers, birders, empty beaches
- **Sagres & the Costa Vicentina** — The windswept southwest tip — fortress cliffs, surf beaches, wild Atlantic. Dramatic, not resort-y. — best for: surfers, road-trippers, sunsets at the end of Europe

## Food and drink

- **O Camilo** (Lagos (Praia do Camilo)) — Grilled fish and cataplana (seafood stew) on a cliff terrace above the cove. ~€35–50/person. Book a terrace table for sunset.
- **Vila Joya** (Albufeira (Praia da Galé)) — Two Michelin stars on the beach — one of Portugal’s great restaurants, in a small luxury hotel. ~€250–300/person tasting. The splurge; book months ahead.
- **A Ver Tavira** (Tavira) — Terrace beside the castle with modern Portuguese plates and a view over the rooftops to the lagoon. ~€40–55/person.
- **Bon Bon** (Carvoeiro (Sesmarias)) — Michelin-starred, intimate, open-fire cooking from the Algarve’s produce. ~€150–200/person. The Carvoeiro special night.
- **A Tasca da Sé** (Faro old town) — Petiscos (Portuguese tapas) and local wine in a tiny bar by the cathedral — the kind of €25 dinner that makes you move here.

## Day trips

- **Benagil cave & the Seven Hanging Valleys** (From Carvoeiro: 10 min (half day)) — Kayak or boat into the cathedral-like Benagil sea cave at opening (before the swell and the crowds), then walk the 6-km cliff trail from Praia da Marinha to Vale Centeanes.
- **Ponta da Piedade by boat** (From Lagos marina (1–2h)) — A small boat threading the grottoes and arches below Lagos’s cliffs — the single most photogenic hour on the coast. Pair with a swim at Praia do Camilo.
- **Ria Formosa islands** (20–30 min by ferry from Tavira or Olhão) — Ferry from Olhão or Tavira to Culatra or Ilha de Tavira — barefoot fishing villages, empty white sand, grilled fish at a shack. The east Algarve’s secret.
- **Sagres & Cabo de São Vicente** (40 min from Lagos) — Drive west to the fortress on the cliffs, the lighthouse at the end of Europe, and the surf beaches of the Costa Vicentina. Sunset here is a ritual.

## Common mistakes

- **Basing in Albufeira by accident:** Its strip is the Algarve’s package-holiday nightlife zone. Unless that’s the plan, stay in Lagos, Carvoeiro, Tavira or the Golden Triangle.
- **Arriving at Benagil at midday:** The cave is a boat-and-kayak traffic jam by 11. Book the first departure, or skip the cave and walk the cliffs instead.
- **Expecting Mediterranean sea temperatures:** It’s the Atlantic — 19–22°C in summer, bracing in May. Great for a dip, not a soak. The west coast is colder than the east.
- **Skipping the toll transponder:** The A22 has no toll booths — only cameras. Without the rental company’s transponder you’ll be chasing fines online for weeks.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which part of the Algarve should I stay in?

Lagos or Carvoeiro for the famous cliffs and coves, the Golden Triangle (Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura) for golf and big resorts, Tavira for quiet authenticity. Many week-long trips split west and east.

### How do I get there from Canada?

Nonstop Toronto to Lisbon (7h), then a 45-minute flight or a 2.5-hour drive to Faro. Combining three nights in Lisbon with a week in the Algarve is the classic Portugal trip.

### Is the Algarve good for families?

One of the best in Europe — safe, calm coves in the centre and east, resorts with kids’ clubs, water parks, dolphin boats, and reasonable prices. Avoid the August crush if you can.

### How many days do I need?

Five to seven on the coast. Three nights west (Lagos/Carvoeiro) and three or four centre or east covers the best of it without rushing.
