## Overview

Bermuda isn't in the Caribbean — it's 1,000 km off North Carolina, two and a half hours from Toronto, and that changes everything: pink-sand beaches, pastel British-colonial towns, cricket and Bermuda shorts, afternoon tea and rum swizzles, with no cruise-ship chaos and no all-inclusives. It's the easiest long-weekend island escape from Canada, a safe and genteel honeymoon, and in summer the water is as blue as anywhere. Just don't come expecting winter sun.

## At a glance

- **Best time to visit:** June to September is beach season — 27–30°C, warm water (26–28°C), everything open, and July–August the busiest.
- **Budget:** $220–300 USD/day (a guesthouse or Airbnb, fish sandwiches, buses and ferries). Mid-range: $450–700/day (a 4-star like the Hamilton Princess or Cambridge Beaches, scooter or e-bike rental, two dinners out).
- **Getting there from Canada:** Fly into L.F. Wade (BDA) — nonstop from Toronto (YYZ) on Air Canada (~2.5h, year-round) and WestJet (seasonal).

## Best time to visit

**June to September** is beach season — 27–30°C, warm water (26–28°C), everything open, and July–August the busiest. **May and October** are the sweet spots: 23–26°C, the sea still swimmable (especially October), hotel rates 25–35% lower, golf perfect. **November to April** is cool (16–21°C), windy and not a beach trip — but it’s cheap, green, and good for golf, walking and a Hamilton city weekend. **Hurricane season** peaks August–October; Bermuda’s reef and building codes mean storms rarely cause lasting disruption.

## Budget

**Budget:** $220–300 USD/day (a guesthouse or Airbnb, fish sandwiches, buses and ferries). **Mid-range:** $450–700/day (a 4-star like the Hamilton Princess or Cambridge Beaches, scooter or e-bike rental, two dinners out). **Luxury:** $1,000–2,000+/day (Rosewood Bermuda, The Loren, St. Regis, or a Tucker’s Town estate). Bermuda is expensive — a Caribbean-plus price level with a British sensibility. Groceries and dining run well above Toronto.

## Getting there

**Fly into L.F. Wade (BDA)** — nonstop from **Toronto (YYZ)** on Air Canada (~2.5h, year-round) and WestJet (seasonal). It’s the shortest flight to any island on this site. BDA is 15 min from Hamilton and 30–40 min from the south-shore hotels. Pre-arrange a hotel transfer or take a taxi (~$35–55); there’s no Uber.

## Getting around

**Visitors can’t rent cars.** Options: the excellent **pink buses and ferries** (a multi-day pass is the best value on the island), **scooters** (classic, but accidents are common — the roads are narrow and left-hand), the small electric **Twizy** two-seaters, e-bikes, or taxis. Most south-shore hotels are a bus or ferry from Hamilton; the ferry across the Great Sound to Dockyard is the scenic commute.

## Quick facts

- **Airport:** L.F. Wade International (BDA)
- **Currency:** BMD (Bermuda Dollar, 1:1 with USD); USD accepted
- **Language:** English
- **Time zone:** GMT-4 (Atlantic, follows daylight saving; +1h from Toronto)
- **Plugs:** Type A/B, 120V (Canadian plugs work)
- **Visa (Canadians):** Visa-free for Canadians (up to 90 days)
- **Tipping:** 15–17% service charge usually added

## Where to stay

- **South Shore — Horseshoe Bay to Elbow Beach** — The pink-sand beaches: Horseshoe Bay, Warwick Long Bay, Jobson’s Cove, Elbow Beach. Rosewood and the Fairmont Southampton (reopening) are here. — best for: beach weeks, honeymoons, the postcard
- **Hamilton** — The small, pastel capital — Front Street, the Hamilton Princess with its art collection and marina, restaurants, the ferry hub. — best for: short trips, nightlife (such as it is), a car-free base
- **St. George’s** — The UNESCO 17th-century town at the east end — cobbled lanes, Tobacco Bay snorkelling, St. Regis on the point. Quiet and historic. — best for: history, snorkelling, the St. Regis
- **Tucker’s Town & Castle Harbour** — The private estates and the Mid Ocean Club golf course — Bermuda’s old-money enclave. The Loren and Rosewood’s Tucker’s Point are the stays. — best for: golf, privacy, luxury
- **Somerset & Dockyard** — The west end: the Royal Naval Dockyard’s museum and shops (and the cruise ships), Cambridge Beaches on its own peninsula, Somerset Bridge. — best for: couples at Cambridge Beaches, a quieter west base

## Food and drink

- **Art Mel’s Spicy Dicy** (Hamilton (St. Monica’s Road)) — The definitive Bermuda fish sandwich — fried fish on raisin bread with tartar and hot sauce. ~$15. Cash, takeaway, worth the detour.
- **The Swizzle Inn** (Bailey’s Bay) — Home of the rum swizzle since 1932 — a pub with business cards pinned to every surface. Swizzles and a fish chowder. ~$25–40/person.
- **Marcus’** (Hamilton Princess) — Marcus Samuelsson’s waterfront restaurant — Bermuda fish chowder reimagined, jerk-spiced catches, harbour views. ~$80–110/person.
- **The Waterlot Inn** (Southampton) — A 1670s inn turned steakhouse on Jews Bay — the island’s special-occasion dinner, sunset from the terrace. ~$110–150/person. Book ahead.
- **Wahoo’s Bistro** (St. George’s) — Harbour-side seafood in the old town — wahoo nuggets, fish chowder with sherry pepper and black rum. ~$40–60/person.

## Day trips

- **South-shore beach walk** (On foot from Horseshoe Bay (half day)) — The railway trail and the dune paths link Horseshoe Bay to Jobson’s Cove, Stonehole Bay and Warwick Long Bay — pink sand, limestone arches, a swim in each. The island’s best morning.
- **Crystal & Fantasy Caves** (20 min by bus from Hamilton) — Crystal-clear underground pools beneath stalactites in Bailey’s Bay, 20 minutes from Hamilton. Pair with a rum swizzle at the Swizzle Inn next door.
- **St. George’s & Tobacco Bay** (45 min by bus from Hamilton) — Wander the UNESCO town, the unfinished church, St. Peter’s (the oldest Anglican church outside Britain), then snorkel Tobacco Bay’s limestone formations.
- **Snorkel or dive the wrecks** (Half day by boat from Dockyard) — Bermuda’s reef has sunk 300+ ships — the Constellation, the Cristóbal Colón, the Mary Celestia. Snorkel trips from Dockyard; divers get the world’s best wreck density.

## Common mistakes

- **Booking a winter “beach” trip:** November to April is 16–21°C and windy. Bermuda is a May–October beach destination. For winter sun, this is the wrong island — pick the Caribbean.
- **Renting a scooter without experience:** Narrow roads, left-hand driving, hills and rain make scooter crashes the island’s most common tourist injury. Buses, ferries and the electric Twizys are the safer calls.
- **Expecting an all-inclusive:** There are none. Bermuda is à la carte, and dining is expensive. Budget for it, or book a hotel with a meal plan.
- **Treating it as a Caribbean island:** It’s British, reserved, and quieter at night. Dress codes exist (jackets at some dinners), beaches close at dusk, and the vibe is afternoon tea, not Carnival.
