## Overview

Lake Como is Italy at its most cinematic — a 50-km inverted Y of deep blue water walled by Alps, with Belle Époque villas, wooden Riva boats, and villages that stack up the hillside like opera sets. It's the honeymoon and anniversary lake: Bellagio for the postcard, Varenna for romance, Tremezzo for the grand hotels, and a ferry network that turns every day into a boat day. An hour from Milan, it's the easiest luxury add-on in Europe.

## At a glance

- **Best time to visit:** May to June and September are ideal — warm (22–28°C), gardens in bloom or vines heavy, the lake calm, and the grand hotels fully open but not yet at August pitch.
- **How long to stay:** Three nights minimum, four or five ideal. It pairs beautifully with two nights in Milan or a week elsewhere in Italy — most of our honeymooners do Como plus the Amalfi Coast or Tuscany.
- **Budget:** $150–220 USD/day (a B&B in Varenna or Menaggio, trattoria dinners, ferry passes).
- **Getting there from Canada:** Fly into Milan Malpensa (MXP) — nonstop from Toronto (YYZ) on Air Canada (~8.5h), or Montreal (YUL) seasonally.

## Best time to visit

**May to June and September** are ideal — warm (22–28°C), gardens in bloom or vines heavy, the lake calm, and the grand hotels fully open but not yet at August pitch. **July–August** is hot, crowded and expensive; the lake swims beautifully but Bellagio can feel like a queue. **April and October** are quieter and cheaper; October is golden and still mild. **November to March** most lake hotels and the villas close — it’s a local’s lake, misty and lovely but not a holiday.

## Budget

**Budget:** $150–220 USD/day (a B&B in Varenna or Menaggio, trattoria dinners, ferry passes). **Mid-range:** $400–650/day (a lakeview 4-star like Hotel Belvedere or the Grand Hotel Menaggio, a private boat hour, a Michelin lunch). **Luxury:** $1,200–3,000+/day (Villa d’Este, Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Passalacqua, Mandarin Oriental — the properties where advisor perks are most valuable). Boats are the hidden cost: a private Riva with a driver is ~$350–450/hour.

## Getting there

**Fly into Milan Malpensa (MXP)** — nonstop from **Toronto (YYZ)** on Air Canada (~8.5h), or **Montreal (YUL)** seasonally. From MXP it’s 60–75 min by private transfer to Como or Cernobbio (~€140–180), or train via Milano Centrale to Como San Giovanni or Varenna-Esino (1–1.5h total). For Bellagio and the mid-lake, drive to Como then ferry, or take the train to Varenna and the 15-min boat across.

## Getting around

**Ferries are the point** — the Navigazione Laghi network connects every village; a mid-lake day pass (~€15) lets you hop Bellagio–Varenna–Menaggio–Tremezzo all day. **Private boats** (Riva or water taxi) for sunset and villa visits. **Skip the car** unless you’re staying in a remote villa — the lake road is narrow, slow and parking is brutal in Bellagio and Varenna.

## Quick facts

- **Airport:** Milan Malpensa (MXP); Milan Linate (LIN)
- **Currency:** EUR (Euro)
- **Language:** Italian; English in hotels and restaurants
- **Time zone:** GMT+1 (CET, +6h from Toronto)
- **Plugs:** Type C/F/L, 230V (adapter needed)
- **Visa (Canadians):** Schengen: 90 days visa-free for Canadians
- **Tipping:** Not expected; round up or leave €5–10 for great service

## Where to stay

- **Bellagio** — The “pearl of the lake” on the tip where the branches meet — stepped lanes, Villa Melzi gardens, Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. Beautiful, busy, central for ferries. — best for: first-timers, ferry-hopping, the classic photo
- **Varenna** — Across the water from Bellagio, smaller and more romantic — the lovers’ walk, Villa Monastero, a train station for easy Milan access. — best for: couples, honeymoons, car-free trips
- **Tremezzo & Cadenabbia** — The grand west-shore hotel strip facing Bellagio — Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa Carlotta’s gardens, the Greenway walking path. — best for: luxury stays, garden lovers, sunrise over Bellagio
- **Cernobbio & Como** — The southern end nearest Milan — Villa d’Este, the Como funicular to Brunate, a real town with shops and a cathedral. — best for: short trips, a Milan combo, Villa d’Este devotees
- **Menaggio** — A lively west-shore town with a lakefront promenade, a lido, and the road to Lugano. Good value, excellent ferry links. — best for: families, value, Switzerland side trips

## Food and drink

- **Il Gatto Nero** (Cernobbio (hills above)) — The celebrity table — a hillside terrace over the lake with risotto al pesce persico and a serious wine list. ~€90–130/person. Book 2–3 weeks ahead in season.
- **Mistral at Villa Serbelloni** (Bellagio) — Michelin-starred molecular-meets-lake cooking in the grandest hotel on the water. ~€150–220/person tasting. Jacket optional, romance mandatory.
- **Crotto del Misto** (Lezzeno) — Old-school lakeside crotto — missoltini (sun-dried lake fish), grilled perch, polenta, local wine, feet from the water. ~€45–60/person. Arrive by boat.
- **La Darsena** (Tremezzo) — Terrace dining right on the harbour with Bellagio across the water — handmade pasta, lake fish, sunset. ~€55–75/person.
- **Gelateria Riva** (Varenna) — Tiny gelato shop on the waterfront — pistachio and lemon, eaten on the lovers’ walk. ~€4. The afternoon ritual.

## Day trips

- **Villa del Balbianello** (15 min by boat from Tremezzo) — The most beautiful villa on the lake (Star Wars, Casino Royale), on a wooded promontory at Lenno — loggia, terraced gardens, and the best way in is by boat to the dock. Book timed tickets; closed Mondays and Wednesdays.
- **Villa Carlotta & the Greenway** (On the west shore (half day)) — Botanical gardens of azaleas and camellias with a neoclassical villa, then walk the 10-km Greenway path along the shore through Tremezzo and Lenno.
- **Lugano, Switzerland** (40 min by car from Menaggio) — A 40-min drive from Menaggio to a palm-lined Swiss lakefront with Italian food and Swiss precision — Monte Brè funicular, a lido, a different passport stamp.
- **Milan** (1h by train from Varenna) — The Duomo, The Last Supper (book a month ahead), Quadrilatero shopping and a Navigli aperitivo — an easy train day from Varenna or Como.

## Common mistakes

- **Staying in Como town:** It’s a real city at the far southern tip, 1.5–2 hours by slow ferry from Bellagio. Stay mid-lake (Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo, Menaggio) unless you’re at Villa d’Este.
- **Driving the lake road:** Single-lane in places, buses coming the other way, no parking anywhere you want to stop. Take the train to Varenna and let the ferries do the work.
- **Not booking Balbianello and the restaurants:** Villa del Balbianello sells out, the top tables book weeks ahead in June and September, and private boats go early. Lock them before you fly.
- **Coming in August for peace:** It’s hot, full and pricey. If romance and calm are the point, May, June or September is the lake you’re imagining.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where should I stay on Lake Como?

### How many days do I need?

Three nights minimum, four or five ideal. It pairs beautifully with two nights in Milan or a week elsewhere in Italy — most of our honeymooners do Como plus the Amalfi Coast or Tuscany.

### Do I need a car?

No — and you’ll be happier without one. Train to Varenna, ferries between villages, a private boat for the special day. Only rent if you’re in a remote villa.

Yes, June to September — the water reaches 22–24°C. Lidos in Menaggio, Bellagio and Lenno have platforms; a private boat lets you swim from the deck in the quiet coves.
