## Overview

Madeira is a subtropical volcano in the Atlantic, 1,000 km from Lisbon, with year-round spring weather, levada walks along centuries-old irrigation channels through laurel forest, cliffs that drop 600 metres into the sea, and a capital — Funchal — of gardens, wine lodges and the grande-dame Reid's Palace. It's the European island for people who'd rather hike to a waterfall than lie on a beach, with a hotel scene (Savoy Palace, The Cliff Bay, Les Suites at The Cliff Bay) that's quietly superb, and a 7-hour flight from Toronto.

## At a glance

- **Best time to visit:** Madeira is year-round — 18–26°C every month, which is the point. April to June is the sweet spot: flowers everywhere (the Flower Festival in late April/May), clear mountain days, hotels not yet full.
- **How long to stay:** Five to seven. Four days of levadas, peaks and the north coast plus a Funchal day; add two nights on Porto Santo for a beach finish.
- **Budget:** $90–140 USD/day (a Funchal guesthouse, espetada and poncha, buses and shared levada tours).
- **Getting there from Canada:** No nonstops from Canada. Fly YYZ → Lisbon (LIS) on Air Canada or TAP (~7h), then a 90-minute TAP hop to Funchal (FNC); Porto (OPO) also connects.

## Best time to visit

**Madeira is year-round** — 18–26°C every month, which is the point. **April to June** is the sweet spot: flowers everywhere (the Flower Festival in late April/May), clear mountain days, hotels not yet full. **September to October** is the warmest sea (22–24°C) and the wine harvest. **July–August** is busiest and the mountains can be cloudy by noon; the coast stays sunny. **November to March** is mild (17–20°C), greener, wetter in the north and the hills; Funchal’s New Year fireworks are world-famous. Porto Santo, the sandy sister island, is best June–September.

## Budget

**Budget:** $90–140 USD/day (a Funchal guesthouse, espetada and poncha, buses and shared levada tours). **Mid-range:** $250–400/day (a 4-star in Funchal’s hotel zone, a rental car, a guided levada walk, a catamaran). **Luxury:** $600–1,200+/day (Reid’s Palace, Savoy Palace, The Cliff Bay, Les Suites, or a quinta in the hills — where advisor perks and the Belmond relationship count). Madeira is among the best-value luxury in Western Europe.

## Getting there

**No nonstops from Canada.** Fly **YYZ → Lisbon (LIS)** on Air Canada or TAP (~7h), then a **90-minute TAP hop to Funchal (FNC)**; Porto (OPO) also connects. Several UK and European cities fly nonstop in season. FNC’s runway on stilts above the sea is famous for crosswind landings and occasional diversions — build a buffer into tight connections. The airport is 20 min from Funchal.

## Getting around

**Rent a car** for the island — tunnels and the expressway make the north coast and the mountains 30–60 minutes from Funchal, and the levada trailheads need wheels. Roads are steep and narrow in the villages; an automatic helps. **Funchal** is walkable with cable cars to Monte and the Botanical Garden. **Guided levada walks** include transfers if you skip the car. **Ferry to Porto Santo** is 2.5 hours; flights 20 minutes.

## Quick facts

- **Airport:** Madeira (FNC) via Lisbon (LIS)
- **Currency:** EUR (Euro)
- **Language:** Portuguese; English widely spoken
- **Time zone:** GMT+0 (WET, +5h from Toronto)
- **Plugs:** Type C/F, 230V (adapter needed)
- **Visa (Canadians):** Schengen: 90 days visa-free for Canadians
- **Tipping:** 5–10% at restaurants; not obligatory

## Where to stay

- **Funchal — the hotel zone & Lido** — The seafront strip west of the centre where the grand hotels sit on the cliffs — Reid’s, The Cliff Bay, Savoy Palace, Pestana. Sea-water pools, gardens, 15 min walk to town. — best for: first-timers, luxury, easy base
- **Funchal old town (Zona Velha)** — The painted doors of Rua de Santa Maria, the Mercado dos Lavradores, Blandy’s wine lodge, cable car to Monte, the harbour. — best for: culture, food, car-free stays
- **Monte & the hills** — The cool village above Funchal — the Monte Palace tropical garden, the wicker toboggan ride, and quintas (manor-house hotels) in the gardens. — best for: garden lovers, a cooler stay, romance
- **The north coast — Santana, São Vicente, Porto Moniz** — The wild, green side: Santana’s triangular thatched houses, the Ponta de São Lourenço walk, Porto Moniz’s lava rock pools, the Seixal black-sand beach. — best for: scenery, hikers, a second base
- **Porto Santo** — The sister island 40 km away with a 9-km golden beach and almost nothing else — the beach day Madeira doesn’t have. — best for: a beach escape, families, June–September

## Food and drink

- **Espetada at a churrascaria** (Câmara de Lobos / Estreito) — Chunks of beef on a bay-leaf skewer hung from a hook over the table, with bolo do caco garlic bread and milho frito. ~€20–30/person. Santo António and Viola are the names.
- **William at Reid’s Palace** (Funchal) — Michelin-starred fine dining with Atlantic views from the island’s grand hotel, after a sunset cocktail on the terrace. ~€150–200/person. Book ahead; smart dress.
- **Mercado dos Lavradores** (Funchal old town) — The farmers’ market — tropical fruit you’ve never heard of (taste before you buy; vendors upsell), flowers, and the fish hall with black scabbardfish. Mornings.
- **Poncha at a bar in Câmara de Lobos** (Câmara de Lobos) — The island’s drink — sugarcane spirit, honey and citrus, stirred with a wooden caralhinho — in the fishing village Churchill painted. ~€3–4.
- **Blandy’s Wine Lodge** (Funchal) — Madeira wine tour and tasting in the 1840 lodge — Sercial to Malmsey, some from the 19th century. ~€15–40. Pair with a slice of bolo de mel.

## Day trips

- **Levada das 25 Fontes & Risco** (1h from Funchal (half day)) — The classic levada walk through Rabaçal’s laurel forest to a waterfall and a pool fed by 25 springs — 11 km, moderate, magical in the mist. Go early; the car park fills.
- **Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo** (45 min from Funchal (full day)) — The island’s great ridge hike between its two highest peaks — tunnels, staircases, a sea of cloud below. 7 km each way, strenuous, unforgettable at sunrise.
- **The north-coast loop** (Full day by car) — Drive Santana’s thatched houses, the São Vicente caves, Porto Moniz’s natural pools, and back via the Encumeada pass — Madeira’s scenic road day.
- **Dolphin & whale catamaran** (From Funchal marina (3h)) — Year-round sightings off Funchal — pilot whales, bottlenose and spotted dolphins, sperm whales in season — with a swim stop at Cabo Girão’s cliffs.

## Common mistakes

- **Expecting beaches:** Madeira is cliffs, lava pools and sea-water hotel pools; the sandy beaches are on Porto Santo. Come for the walks and the scenery, and take the ferry for a sand day.
- **Starting the mountain hikes at midday:** Cloud rolls in by noon most days. Pico do Arieiro and the levadas are dawn-start walks; the car parks also fill by 8:30am in summer.
- **Trusting the market fruit sellers:** The Mercado dos Lavradores is beautiful and the fruit stalls upsell tourists hard. Taste, ask the price per kilo, and buy small.
- **Skipping the car to save money:** Tours are fine, but a car for three days turns Madeira from a Funchal holiday into an island one. Rentals are cheap; the tunnels make it easy.
