## Overview

Mykonos is the Cyclades at full volume — whitewashed cubes and blue doors in Chora, the windmills above Little Venice at sunset, beach clubs where the DJ starts at 4pm, and a hotel scene (Cali, Santa Marina, Kalesma, Bill & Coo) that competes with anywhere in the Mediterranean. It's expensive, it's social, and it's also, if you know where to go, still beautiful: the north-coast beaches, the inland villages, and Delos — one of the great archaeological sites in Greece — twenty minutes offshore.

## At a glance

- **Best time to visit:** Late May to June and September are the sweet spots — 24–29°C, the sea warm, the beach clubs and restaurants open, the meltemi wind lighter than in high summer, and hotel rates 30–40% below July–August.
- **How long to stay:** Four to five nights. It is a small island; a longer stay is about pacing and boat days rather than more sights.
- **Budget:** $150–220 USD/day (a studio in Ano Mera or Ornos, gyros and bakery breakfasts, the bus).
- **Getting there from Canada:** No nonstops from Canada.

## Best time to visit

**Late May to June and September** are the sweet spots — 24–29°C, the sea warm, the beach clubs and restaurants open, the meltemi wind lighter than in high summer, and hotel rates 30–40% below July–August. **July and August** are peak: hot, windy (the meltemi blows hard from the north), packed, and the most expensive — but also when the scene is at its most electric. **October** is calm and golden with the sea still swimmable; many places close mid-month. **November to April** the island largely shuts.

## Budget

**Budget:** $150–220 USD/day (a studio in Ano Mera or Ornos, gyros and bakery breakfasts, the bus). **Mid-range:** $400–700/day (a 4-star in Ornos or Platis Gialos, a scooter or ATV, one beach-club lunch, dinners in Chora). **Luxury:** $1,200–3,500+/day (Cali, Kalesma, Santa Marina, Bill & Coo, Myconian Collection — where advisor perks and the villa network count). Beach clubs charge €50–150 per sunbed in August; dinners run €80–200. Mykonos is Greece’s priciest island by a distance.

## Getting there

**No nonstops from Canada.** Fly **YYZ → Athens (ATH)** on Air Canada or Air Transat (~10h, seasonal) then a **40-minute hop to Mykonos (JMK)** on Aegean, Olympic or Sky Express, or connect through a European hub (London, Frankfurt, Zurich) with summer nonstops to JMK. **Ferries** from Piraeus or Rafina take 2.5–5 hours (SeaJets and Blue Star) and are the romantic way to arrive. JMK is 10 min from Chora; hotels send transfers.

## Getting around

**Rent an ATV or small car** for a few days — the beaches are spread out and taxis are famously scarce (about 30 on the whole island). The **public bus** from Fabrika in Chora covers the main beaches cheaply. **Sea taxis** link Platis Gialos to Paraga, Paradise and Super Paradise. **Chora is pedestrian only** — park outside and walk. Book cars months ahead for July–August.

## Quick facts

- **Airport:** Mykonos (JMK) via Athens (ATH)
- **Currency:** EUR (Euro)
- **Language:** Greek; English everywhere in tourism
- **Time zone:** GMT+2 (EET, +7h from Toronto)
- **Plugs:** Type C/F, 230V (adapter needed)
- **Visa (Canadians):** Schengen: 90 days visa-free for Canadians
- **Tipping:** 5–10%; round up at tavernas

## Where to stay

- **Chora (Mykonos Town)** — The whitewashed labyrinth — Little Venice, the windmills, Matoyianni street boutiques, the bars. Loud at night, magical at dawn. Bill & Coo, Belvedere, Kensho. — best for: nightlife, first-timers, car-free stays
- **Ornos & Agios Ioannis** — Sheltered family-friendly bays 10 minutes south of town, calmer and quieter, with Santa Marina and Kensho Ornos. — best for: families, couples who want quiet near town
- **Platis Gialos, Psarou & Paraga** — The beach-club coast: Nammos at Psarou (the yachts), Scorpios at Paraga (the sunset), Principote at Panormos. Sea taxis link them. — best for: the scene, groups, long lunches
- **Agios Stefanos & Houlakia** — The northwest, facing Delos: Cali Mykonos, Myconian Imperial, Kalesma above — the island’s most serious luxury, 5 minutes from Chora. — best for: luxury, honeymoons, sunsets
- **The north — Agios Sostis, Fokos, Ano Mera** — Wild beaches with no sunbeds, Kiki’s Tavern with no electricity, the inland village of Ano Mera and its monastery. Windy in August, empty in June. — best for: escaping the scene, the real Cyclades

## Food and drink

- **Kiki’s Tavern** (Agios Sostis) — No electricity, no reservations, no sign — grilled meats and salads under a vine above a wild beach. ~€30–40/person. Arrive before 1pm and queue with a glass of wine.
- **Nammos** (Psarou Beach) — The beach club that made Mykonos a yacht destination — Mediterranean plates, champagne, sunbeds from €100+. ~€150–300/person. Go once, with eyes open.
- **Scorpios** (Paraga) — Sunset rituals, live music and a bohemian-luxe crowd on a headland — the island’s best evening. ~€80–150/person. Book sunset dinner weeks ahead.
- **Kounelas** (Chora) — A fish taverna in the backstreets since 1977 — grilled catch by the kilo, no frills, good prices for Mykonos. ~€40–60/person.
- **Kalita** (Chora) — Garden courtyard dinner — refined Greek-Mediterranean, candles under the bougainvillea. ~€70–100/person. Book ahead.

## Day trips

- **Delos** (30 min by boat from Chora (half day)) — The sacred island of Apollo — a whole ancient city of temples, mosaics and the Terrace of the Lions, uninhabited and extraordinary. Boats from Chora at 9–10am; take a guide. Closed Mondays.
- **Rhenia sandbars by yacht** (Half or full day (~€1,500–4,000 private)) — A private boat or catamaran to the empty beaches and turquoise bays of Rhenia, Delos’s uninhabited neighbour, with lunch and swimming off the stern.
- **Tinos** (20–30 min by ferry) — The marble-carving island next door — 40 pigeon-house villages, the Panagia Evangelistria pilgrimage church, the best food in the Cyclades at a fraction of Mykonos prices.
- **North-beach drive** (30 min from Chora (full day)) — ATV to Fokos and Agios Sostis, lunch at Kiki’s, a stop at Ano Mera’s monastery, back for sunset at the windmills. The non-scene day.

## Common mistakes

- **Coming in August for peace and quiet:** August Mykonos is the loudest, windiest, most expensive week in Greece. For beauty without the crush, come in June or September — or choose Paros, Naxos or Milos instead.
- **Relying on taxis:** There are barely any. Rent an ATV or car, use the bus, or book hotel transfers. Expect to wait an hour for a cab on a July night.
- **Not budgeting for the beach clubs:** A sunbed at Nammos or Scorpios in high season is €100–300 before food. Decide in advance which one (if any) is your splurge day.
- **Skipping Delos:** Twenty minutes away is a UNESCO site to rival Pompeii, and most visitors never go. It’s the best morning on Mykonos.

## Frequently asked questions

### When is the best time to visit Mykonos?

Late May to June and September — warm, open, lighter winds and 30–40% cheaper than July–August. August is peak party season and the meltemi wind is at its strongest.

### Mykonos or Santorini?

Mykonos for beaches, beach clubs and nightlife; Santorini for the caldera view and sunsets. Many honeymoons do both — 3 nights each, linked by a 2-hour ferry.

### Is Mykonos good for families?

Yes, if you stay in Ornos or Agios Ioannis and treat the beach clubs as optional. Calm bays, Delos for history, boat days — just avoid August.

### How many days do I need?

Four to five nights. It is a small island; a longer stay is about pacing and boat days rather than more sights. Pair with Santorini, Paros or Naxos for a week to ten days.
