## Overview

Thailand's Andaman coast is where the limestone karsts rise out of jade water — Phang Nga Bay, the Phi Phi islands, Railay's cliffs — and where Thai hospitality meets some of Asia's best beach resorts at prices that still surprise. Phuket is the big island with the airport, the villas and the full range from Patong's chaos to Kamala's calm; Krabi, across the bay, is quieter, more dramatic and the better honeymoon. Done well, this is a two-base trip: a few nights on each side, with a longtail boat in between.

## At a glance

- **Best time to visit:** November to April is the dry season — 28–33°C, calm seas, clear water, and every island boat running.
- **How long to stay:** Around 20–24 hours with one connection via Hong Kong, Taipei or the Gulf. Plan ten nights minimum, and consider two nights in Bangkok or Hong Kong on the way.
- **Budget:** $60–100 USD/day (a guesthouse in Ao Nang or Old Phuket Town, street-food meals for $3, songthaew buses).
- **Getting there from Canada:** No nonstops from Canada. Fly YYZ → Hong Kong (HKG) on Cathay Pacific or Air Canada, Taipei (TPE) on EVA, or Doha/Dubai on Qatar/Emirates, then on to Phuket (HKT) — 20–24 hours total.

## Best time to visit

**November to April** is the dry season — 28–33°C, calm seas, clear water, and every island boat running. **December to February** is peak price and crowds; book villas and the top resorts 4–6 months out. **March–April** is hottest but still dry and quieter. **May to October** is the monsoon: afternoon downpours, rough west-coast seas, some Phi Phi and Similan closures (Similans close May–October), but 40–50% off at the luxury resorts and plenty of sunny mornings. Krabi’s east-facing beaches handle the monsoon better than Phuket’s west coast.

## Budget

**Budget:** $60–100 USD/day (a guesthouse in Ao Nang or Old Phuket Town, street-food meals for $3, songthaew buses). **Mid-range:** $200–350/day (a 4-star pool villa in Kamala or Ao Nang, a private longtail day, a Thai massage daily). **Luxury:** $600–1,500+/day (Amanpuri, Rosewood Phuket, Trisara, Rayavadee in Railay, Six Senses Yao Noi — world-class properties at half the price of the Caribbean, where advisor perks like breakfast and upgrades add real value). Thailand is the best luxury-per-dollar on this list.

## Getting there

**No nonstops from Canada.** Fly **YYZ → Hong Kong (HKG)** on Cathay Pacific or Air Canada, **Taipei (TPE)** on EVA, or **Doha/Dubai** on Qatar/Emirates, then on to **Phuket (HKT)** — 20–24 hours total. Krabi (KBV) has flights from Bangkok, Singapore and KL. Most trips land in Phuket, then reach Krabi by a 2-hour speedboat from the east coast or a 3-hour drive around the bay. HKT is 45–60 min from the west-coast beaches by private transfer.

## Getting around

**Phuket:** private transfers and Grab (ride-hailing) are easy; rent a car only if you’re confident with Thai traffic — scooters are the local default but the accident rate is real. **Krabi:** Ao Nang is the hub; Railay is boat-only (10-min longtail from Ao Nang). **Islands:** longtails for short hops, speedboats for Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay, or your resort’s private boat. A private longtail with a captain for a day is ~$80–120.

## Quick facts

- **Airport:** Phuket (HKT); Krabi (KBV)
- **Currency:** THB (Thai Baht)
- **Language:** Thai; English in tourist areas
- **Time zone:** GMT+7 (+12h from Toronto)
- **Plugs:** Type A/B/C/O, 220V (adapter needed for most devices)
- **Visa (Canadians):** Visa-free for Canadians (60 days)
- **Tipping:** Not expected; 10% at nicer restaurants, 50–100 THB for massages

## Where to stay

- **Kamala & Surin (Phuket west coast)** — The “Millionaires’ Mile”: Amanpuri, Trisara, Twinpalms, calm beaches, good restaurants, 20 min from Patong without the noise. — best for: honeymoons, luxury villas, couples
- **Kata & Karon (Phuket)** — Long, family-friendly beaches south of Patong with a mid-range resort strip, surf in the monsoon and easy restaurant streets. — best for: families, first-timers, value
- **Old Phuket Town** — Sino-Portuguese shophouses, Sunday walking market, the island’s best coffee and Peranakan food. No beach; a day or a night. — best for: food, photography, a non-beach evening
- **Ao Nang & Railay (Krabi)** — Ao Nang is the boat-launch town with the restaurants; Railay is the car-free peninsula of limestone cliffs, four beaches and Rayavadee. — best for: climbers, scenery, the dramatic honeymoon
- **Koh Yao Noi & Phang Nga Bay** — A quiet island in the middle of the bay between Phuket and Krabi — Six Senses, Cape Kudu, rubber plantations, longtails at dawn. — best for: total calm, the view, a 3-night escape

## Food and drink

- **One Chun** (Old Phuket Town) — Phuketian-Chinese home cooking in a vintage shophouse — crab curry with rice noodles, moo hong (braised pork belly). ~$12–20/person. Lunch, expect a short wait.
- **PRU** (Trisara, Phuket) — Thailand’s first Michelin-starred farm-to-table restaurant, sourcing from its own farm — a 12-course tasting on the sea. ~$150–200/person. The special night.
- **Baan Rim Pa** (Kalim, Phuket) — Royal Thai cuisine on a cliff terrace over the sea north of Patong — the long-running romantic dinner. ~$50–70/person. Book a sunset table.
- **The Grotto at Rayavadee** (Railay (Phra Nang Beach)) — Dinner in a limestone cave at beach level under the cliffs — the single most dramatic table on the coast. ~$80–120/person. Non-guests can book.
- **Krabi night market** (Krabi Town (Fri–Sun)) — Grilled seafood, som tam, mango sticky rice and roti from dozens of stalls with live music. ~$5–10. The real Thai evening.

## Day trips

- **Phang Nga Bay by longtail** (Full day from Phuket’s east coast or Krabi) — Limestone towers rising from green water, sea caves you paddle through in a canoe, James Bond Island (go early), and lunch at the floating Muslim village of Koh Panyee.
- **Phi Phi Islands & Maya Bay** (45–60 min by speedboat from Phuket or Krabi) — Speedboat to Maya Bay (visitor-capped, no swimming — still worth it), Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island snorkelling. A private boat avoids the 60-person tours.
- **Four Islands from Railay** (Half day from Ao Nang or Railay) — Chicken Island, Tup Island’s sandbar at low tide, Poda Island and Phra Nang Cave Beach by longtail — Krabi’s classic half-day, best at low tide.
- **Similan Islands (Nov–Apr)** (1.5h by speedboat from Khao Lak (full day)) — Thailand’s best snorkelling and diving — granite boulders, white sand, turtles and reef sharks, 70 km off the coast. Day trips are long; liveaboards are the dream.

## Common mistakes

- **Staying in Patong:** It’s the nightlife strip — loud, crowded, hustly. Kamala, Surin and Kata are 15–20 minutes away and completely different islands.
- **Renting a scooter without experience:** Phuket has one of the worst road-accident rates in Thailand. Use Grab and private drivers; they’re cheap.
- **Doing Phi Phi on a group speedboat at 10am:** Hundreds of boats hit Maya Bay at the same time. A private boat leaving at 7am, or a Krabi-side departure, changes everything.
- **Expecting Caribbean prices:** In a good way — but it means the “luxury” tier is within reach. Don’t book a 3-star when a Trisara-level villa is a few hundred dollars more with an advisor rate.

## Frequently asked questions

### Phuket or Krabi?

Both, if you have a week. Phuket has the airport, the luxury villas and the restaurants; Krabi has the limestone drama, Railay and a calmer pace. Three or four nights each, connected by boat, is the trip I plan most.

### When is the best time to visit?

November to April for dry weather and calm seas. March–April is quieter and hot; December–February is peak. The monsoon (May–October) still has sunny mornings and big resort discounts, and Krabi handles it better.

### Is it good for a honeymoon?

Exceptional — Amanpuri, Trisara, Rayavadee and Six Senses Yao Noi are among the most romantic hotels in Asia, at prices that would get you a 4-star in the Caribbean.

### How long is the flight from Canada?

Around 20–24 hours with one connection via Hong Kong, Taipei or the Gulf. Plan ten nights minimum, and consider two nights in Bangkok or Hong Kong on the way.
