## Overview

Sardinia has the best beaches in Italy and, arguably, the Mediterranean — Caribbean-clear water over white sand at La Pelosa, the pink-granite coves of the Costa Smeralda, the limestone cliffs and sea caves of the Gulf of Orosei. Inland it's another country: shepherds, Bronze Age nuraghi towers, roast suckling pig, and the Blue Zone villages where people live past a hundred. The Costa Smeralda is yacht-and-Aga-Khan glamour; everywhere else is quieter, cheaper and just as beautiful.

## At a glance

- **Best time to visit:** June and September are ideal — 25–30°C, the sea at 22–25°C, everything open, the beaches uncrowded.
- **Budget:** $100–160 USD/day (an agriturismo or B&B in Alghero or the Gulf of Orosei, pizza and seadas, a small rental car).
- **Getting there from Canada:** No nonstops from Canada.

## Best time to visit

**June and September** are ideal — 25–30°C, the sea at 22–25°C, everything open, the beaches uncrowded. **July–August** is Italian holiday season: hot, packed, the Costa Smeralda at peak price and peak glamour; beach parking fills by 9am. **May and early October** are quiet and lovely for hiking and the interior, with the sea a little cool. **November to April** most coastal hotels close; Cagliari and Alghero still make a city break.

## Budget

**Budget:** $100–160 USD/day (an agriturismo or B&B in Alghero or the Gulf of Orosei, pizza and seadas, a small rental car). **Mid-range:** $300–500/day (a 4-star beach hotel outside the Costa Smeralda, a boat day, long seafood lunches). **Luxury:** $900–3,000+/day (Hotel Cala di Volpe, Romazzino, Pitrizza on the Costa Smeralda, or Baglioni and Su Gologone elsewhere — where advisor rates on the Marriott/Luxury Collection properties and the villa network matter). The Costa Smeralda in August is among Europe’s most expensive addresses; the rest of the island is normal Italy.

## Getting there

**No nonstops from Canada.** Fly **YYZ → Rome (FCO) or Milan (MXP)** on Air Canada (~8.5–9h), then **Olbia (OLB)** for the Costa Smeralda and northeast, **Cagliari (CAG)** for the south, or **Alghero (AHO)** for the northwest — all 1-hour hops on ITA, easyJet or Volotea. Summer nonstops also run from many European cities. Ferries from Genoa, Livorno and Civitavecchia (5–10h) are the car-and-family alternative.

## Getting around

**A car is essential** — the beaches, coves and villages are spread across a big island (270 km north to south) and public transport is thin. Roads are good; the coast roads are slow and scenic. **Boats** are the way into the Gulf of Orosei coves (no road access) and around the Maddalena archipelago. Book cars early for July–August; automatics are scarce.

## Quick facts

- **Airport:** Olbia (OLB); Cagliari (CAG); Alghero (AHO)
- **Currency:** EUR (Euro)
- **Language:** Italian & Sardinian; English in tourist areas
- **Time zone:** GMT+1 (CET, +6h from Toronto)
- **Plugs:** Type C/F/L, 230V (adapter needed)
- **Visa (Canadians):** Schengen: 90 days visa-free for Canadians
- **Tipping:** Not expected; round up

## Where to stay

- **Costa Smeralda — Porto Cervo & Porto Rotondo** — The Aga Khan’s 1960s playground — Cala di Volpe, Romazzino, Pitrizza, the marina’s yachts, the Pevero golf course and granite coves like Capriccioli and Liscia Ruja. — best for: luxury, the scene, honeymoons with a budget
- **La Maddalena & Palau** — An archipelago of pink-granite islands north of the Costa Smeralda — Spiaggia Rosa, Budelli, Caprera — best seen by boat. Palau is the ferry port. — best for: boat days, snorkelling, a less flashy north base
- **Alghero & the northwest** — The Catalan-walled town with a beautiful old centre, Neptune’s Grotto, Capo Caccia cliffs and La Pelosa beach at Stintino (reservation required in summer). — best for: culture, value, families
- **Gulf of Orosei — Cala Gonone** — The east-coast cliffs and boat-only coves — Cala Luna, Cala Goloritzé, Cala Mariolu — plus the Supramonte mountains and Su Gologone’s legendary country hotel. — best for: scenery, hikers, the most beautiful water
- **Cagliari & the south** — The capital’s hilltop Castello quarter and Poetto beach, then the southwest’s Chia and Tuerredda beaches and the Forte Village family resort. — best for: a city night, southern beaches, families at Forte Village

## Food and drink

- **Su Gologone** (Oliena (Supramonte)) — The great Sardinian country table — porceddu (spit-roast suckling pig), culurgiones, pane carasau, Cannonau wine, in a gallery-like hotel under the mountains. ~€60–90/person.
- **Il Pescatore** (Porto Cervo marina) — Seafood on a terrace over the yachts — bottarga spaghetti, grilled catch, Vermentino. ~€100–160/person. The Porto Cervo classic.
- **Agriturismo Sa Mandra** (Alghero) — Set-menu farm feast — antipasti, pasta, roast lamb or pig, myrtle liqueur — in a working farmhouse. ~€45–55/person. Book; Sunday lunch is the event.
- **Lo Scoglio / Cala Luna beach kiosk** (Gulf of Orosei) — Grilled fish and cold beer on the sand at the boat-only coves — simple and perfect after a swim. ~€20–35/person.
- **Seadas & mirto** (Everywhere) — The dessert: a fried pastry filled with pecorino and drizzled with bitter honey, with a glass of myrtle-berry liqueur. ~€6–8. Mandatory after every dinner.

## Day trips

- **La Maddalena archipelago by boat** (Full day from Palau or Porto Cervo) — A day on the water among seven pink-granite islands — swim at Cala Corsara and Cala Coticcio (“Tahiti”), see the protected pink beach at Budelli from the deck, lunch on board.
- **Gulf of Orosei coves** (Full day by boat from Cala Gonone) — Boat from Cala Gonone down the cliff coast to Cala Luna, Cala Mariolu and Cala Goloritzé — the clearest water in Italy — with the Bue Marino sea cave on the way.
- **La Pelosa & Asinara** (1h from Alghero (full day)) — The Caribbean-white beach at Stintino (reserve online, mats only, arrive early), then a ferry to Asinara island’s albino donkeys and empty bays.
- **Nuraghi & the interior** (1h from Cagliari (full day)) — Su Nuraxi at Barumini (UNESCO), the Bronze Age tower complex, then the Giara plateau’s wild horses and a Blue Zone village lunch in Ogliastra.

## Common mistakes

- **Thinking the Costa Smeralda is Sardinia:** It is 50 km of glamorous coast on a 1,800-km coastline. Base there if the scene is the point; otherwise Alghero, Orosei or the south give you better beaches for a third of the cost.
- **Arriving at famous beaches after 9am in August:** La Pelosa needs an online reservation; Costa Smeralda coves fill their small car parks by mid-morning. Early starts or boat access.
- **Skipping the interior:** The nuraghi, the Supramonte, the shepherd villages and Su Gologone are the Sardinia that stays with you. Give them two days.
- **Underestimating distances:** Alghero to the Costa Smeralda is 2.5 hours; Cagliari to Olbia is 3.5. Pick one or two regions for a week, not the whole island.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where should I stay in Sardinia?

Costa Smeralda for luxury and the scene; Alghero for culture and value; the Gulf of Orosei for the most dramatic beaches; the south for Chia and Forte Village. A week is best split between two of them.

### When is the best time to visit?

June and September — warm sea, open hotels, no August crowds. July–August is beautiful but hot, full and expensive, especially on the Costa Smeralda.

### Do I need a car?

Yes, from the airport. The beaches and villages are spread out and buses are infrequent. Boats cover the archipelago and the Orosei coves.

### Sardinia or Sicily?

Sardinia for beaches, water clarity and a slower pace; Sicily for history, cities, volcanoes and food variety. Sardinia is the beach trip; Sicily is the culture trip.
