## Overview

Sri Lanka packs a continent into an island the size of Ireland: ancient rock fortresses and cave temples in the Cultural Triangle, misty tea country with a train ride that's a cliché because it's that good, leopards in Yala, blue whales off Mirissa, surf at Arugam Bay, and a southern coast of boutique hotels in old Dutch villas and Geoffrey Bawa-designed retreats. The food is the best in South Asia, the people are warm, and the whole thing costs a fraction of comparable luxury elsewhere.

## At a glance

- **Best time to visit:** Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so somewhere is always in season. December to April is dry on the west and south coasts and the hill country — the classic itinerary window, with January–February peak.
- **How long to stay:** Ten to fourteen nights to do the Cultural Triangle, tea country and the south coast without rushing.
- **Budget:** $50–90 USD/day (a guesthouse, rice-and-curry for $3, trains and tuk-tuks). Mid-range: $200–350/day (a boutique hotel like a Teardrop property or a tea bungalow, a private driver, a Yala jeep).
- **Getting there from Canada:** No nonstops from Canada. Fly YYZ → Colombo (CMB) via Doha (Qatar), Dubai (Emirates), Abu Dhabi (Etihad) or London (SriLankan Airlines) — 19–23 hours total.

## Best time to visit

Sri Lanka has **two monsoons**, so somewhere is always in season. **December to April** is dry on the **west and south coasts and the hill country** — the classic itinerary window, with January–February peak. **May to September** is dry on the **east coast** (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Passikudah) and good for Yala leopards (the park closes briefly in September). **The Cultural Triangle** is driest May–September but fine year-round. Whale season at Mirissa is November–April. Book the south coast villas for Christmas six months out.

## Budget

**Budget:** $50–90 USD/day (a guesthouse, rice-and-curry for $3, trains and tuk-tuks). **Mid-range:** $200–350/day (a boutique hotel like a Teardrop property or a tea bungalow, a private driver, a Yala jeep). **Luxury:** $600–1,500+/day (Amangalla, Amanwella, Cape Weligama, Wild Coast Tented Lodge, Ceylon Tea Trails, Kumu Beach — where advisor perks and the Resplendent Ceylon relationships count). A private driver for the whole trip (~$70–100/day) is the best money you’ll spend.

## Getting there

**No nonstops from Canada.** Fly **YYZ → Colombo (CMB)** via **Doha** (Qatar), **Dubai** (Emirates), **Abu Dhabi** (Etihad) or **London** (SriLankan Airlines) — 19–23 hours total. CMB is actually in Negombo, 40 min north of Colombo and a sensible first night. From the airport, the expressway reaches the south coast (Galle) in 2–2.5 hours; Sigiriya is 4 hours; Kandy 3 hours. A private driver meets you at arrivals and stays for the trip.

## Getting around

**Hire a private driver** — the universal way to do Sri Lanka. Roads are slow (expect 40 km/h average outside the expressway), distances deceptive, and a good driver is a guide, fixer and translator. **Take the train** for the Kandy–Ella hill-country stretch (book reserved seats on the observation car weeks ahead). **Tuk-tuks** for short hops in towns. **Domestic flights and seaplanes** (Cinnamon Air) save hours to the east coast or Yala.

## Quick facts

- **Airport:** Bandaranaike International, Colombo (CMB)
- **Currency:** LKR (Sri Lankan Rupee)
- **Language:** Sinhala & Tamil; English widely spoken
- **Time zone:** GMT+5:30 (+10.5h from Toronto)
- **Plugs:** Type D/G, 230V (adapter needed)
- **Visa (Canadians):** Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) required online before arrival
- **Tipping:** 10% at restaurants; $5–10/day for drivers

## Where to stay

- **Galle & the south coast** — The Dutch-colonial Galle Fort with boutique hotels in merchant houses, then the beach towns of Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa and Tangalle — Amangalla, Amanwella, Cape Weligama, Kumu Beach. — best for: beach-and-culture, honeymoons, the villa life
- **Hill country — Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella** — Tea estates, the Temple of the Tooth, colonial bungalows, the Nine Arch Bridge and the most beautiful train ride in Asia. Ceylon Tea Trails is the stay. — best for: cool air, walkers, the train
- **Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa** — The Lion Rock fortress at dawn, the cave temples, ancient city ruins and elephant gatherings at Minneriya (August–September). Water Garden Sigiriya, Jetwing Vil Uyana. — best for: history, first-timers, elephants
- **Yala & the southeast** — The leopard park — the highest density in the world — plus Bundala’s birds and Wild Coast Tented Lodge on the beach at the park gate. — best for: safari, photographers, a wild night
- **East coast — Trincomalee & Arugam Bay** — The May–September coast: Nilaveli’s white sand and Pigeon Island snorkelling, Arugam Bay’s surf, Passikudah’s shallow bay. Uga Jungle Beach. — best for: summer trips, surfers, a quieter beach

## Food and drink

- **Rice and curry** (Everywhere) — The national plate — six to twelve small curries (dhal, jackfruit, beetroot, fish, pol sambol) around a mound of rice, at lunch. $3 at a roadside spot, $25 at a boutique hotel, both excellent.
- **Ministry of Crab** (Colombo (Dutch Hospital)) — Lagoon crab in garlic or pepper from Sri Lanka’s most famous restaurant, in a 400-year-old hospital building. ~$60–100/person. Book well ahead.
- **Fortaleza / Church Street Social** (Galle Fort) — Courtyard dining inside the fort walls — seafood, Sri Lankan-fusion, cocktails under frangipani. ~$30–50/person.
- **Hoppers at a street stall** (Any town, evenings) — Bowl-shaped rice-flour crepes with an egg in the middle, eaten with sambol and lunu miris. ~$1–2. The breakfast and the late snack.
- **Ceylon Tea Trails planter’s lunch** (Hatton (hill country)) — A multi-course lunch on a colonial bungalow terrace above the tea, with a tasting from the estate. Non-residents can book; ~$50–70/person.

## Day trips

- **Sigiriya at dawn** (From Sigiriya hotels (morning)) — Climb the 1,200 steps of the Lion Rock before 7am — the frescoes, the mirror wall, the palace ruins and the view across the jungle. Then Pidurangala rock opposite for the photo of Sigiriya itself.
- **The Kandy–Ella train** (Kandy to Ella (full day)) — Six to seven hours through tea estates, waterfalls and cloud forest, with the Nine Arch Bridge near Ella. Book the observation car; sit on the right from Kandy for the best views.
- **Yala leopard safari** (From Tissamaharama or Wild Coast (half days)) — Dawn and dusk jeep drives in Block 1 — leopards, sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles. Stay at the park gate to be first in; a private jeep and a good tracker make all the difference.
- **Whale watching from Mirissa** (From Mirissa harbour (morning)) — Blue whales — the largest animals that have ever lived — feed off the south coast November to April. Early boats, 3–4 hours; the responsible operators keep their distance.

## Common mistakes

- **Trying to see everything in a week:** Sri Lanka is small on the map and slow on the road. Ten nights covers the Cultural Triangle, hill country and south coast; seven means dropping one. Two weeks is the real trip.
- **Booking the wrong coast for the season:** West and south: December–April. East: May–September. A July beach week in Mirissa means rain and rough seas; Trincomalee is sunny.
- **Not booking the train in advance:** Reserved seats on the Kandy–Ella observation car sell out weeks ahead in season. Unreserved means standing. Your driver or advisor books it.
- **Skipping the private driver to save money:** At $70–100 a day for a driver who knows every road, café and shortcut, it is the single best value in Sri Lankan travel. Self-driving is legally complicated and genuinely stressful.

## Frequently asked questions

### When is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?

December to April for the classic west/south/hills route; May to September for the east coast. The Cultural Triangle works year-round. There is no bad month if you pick the right coast.

### How long do I need?

Ten to fourteen nights to do the Cultural Triangle, tea country and the south coast without rushing. Seven is possible for one region plus the coast.

### Is Sri Lanka safe?

Yes — tourism has fully rebounded and the island is welcoming and stable. Road travel is the main risk, which is why everyone uses a driver. Check the Government of Canada advisory for current notes.

### Is it good for luxury travel?

Exceptional value — Aman, Resplendent Ceylon (Tea Trails, Cape Weligama, Wild Coast) and Uga properties are world-class at prices far below the Maldives or Bali’s top tier.
