## Overview

Zanzibar is the beach after the safari — a Swahili spice island off Tanzania with Stone Town's carved doors and rooftop sunsets, dhows on turquoise tidal flats, and a run of boutique and luxury resorts (Zuri, The Residence, Baraza, Xanadu, Mnemba Island) along the east and north coasts. The water is bathwater-warm, the reef at Mnemba is superb, and the culture — Omani, Indian, African, Portuguese — is as rich as the pilau. Pair it with the Serengeti for the classic two-week East Africa trip.

## At a glance

- **Best time to visit:** June to October is the cool dry season — 26–29°C, low humidity, calm seas, the best time for the beach and for pairing with a Migration safari.
- **Budget:** $80–130 USD/day (a Stone Town guesthouse or a Paje beach bungalow, street food, dala-dala minibuses).
- **Getting there from Canada:** No nonstops from Canada. Fly YYZ → Zanzibar (ZNZ) via Doha (Qatar Airways, direct DOH–ZNZ), Dubai (Emirates to Dar es Salaam + a 20-min hop), Istanbul (Turkish, direct IST–ZNZ) or Nairobi/Addis — 20–24 hours total.

## Best time to visit

**June to October** is the cool dry season — 26–29°C, low humidity, calm seas, the best time for the beach and for pairing with a Migration safari. **December to February** is hot and dry (30–33°C), with peak Christmas pricing and great diving visibility. **March to May** is the long rains — heavy, humid, many resorts close or discount deeply. **November** has short rains, usually brief, with good value. Note the tides: the east coast has dramatic low tides when the sea retreats a kilometre; the north (Nungwi, Kendwa) is swimmable all day.

## Budget

**Budget:** $80–130 USD/day (a Stone Town guesthouse or a Paje beach bungalow, street food, dala-dala minibuses). **Mid-range:** $250–450/day (a 4-star beach resort on half board, private transfers, a Mnemba snorkel trip). **Luxury:** $700–2,500+/day (Zuri, Xanadu, The Residence, Baraza, Mnemba Island Lodge, Zanzibar White Sand — where advisor rates and perks apply). Zanzibar is notably cheaper than the Indian Ocean islands for comparable resorts.

## Getting there

**No nonstops from Canada.** Fly **YYZ → Zanzibar (ZNZ)** via **Doha** (Qatar Airways, direct DOH–ZNZ), **Dubai** (Emirates to Dar es Salaam + a 20-min hop), **Istanbul** (Turkish, direct IST–ZNZ) or **Nairobi/Addis** — 20–24 hours total. From the Serengeti, Coastal and Auric fly directly from the bush airstrips to ZNZ in about 2.5 hours. ZNZ is 15 min to Stone Town, 60–90 min to the east and north coasts.

## Getting around

**Private transfers** between the airport, Stone Town and the coast (~$50–80) — book through your hotel or advisor. **Stone Town** is walkable (and only walkable: no cars in the lanes). **On the coast**, resorts arrange excursions; taxis for single trips. Rental cars exist but a driver is cheaper and easier. **Dala-dalas** (shared minibuses) are the budget option and genuinely fun.

## Quick facts

- **Airport:** Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ)
- **Currency:** TZS (Tanzanian Shilling); USD accepted at hotels
- **Language:** Swahili; English widely spoken in tourism
- **Time zone:** GMT+3 (+8h from Toronto)
- **Plugs:** Type D/G, 230V (adapter needed)
- **Visa (Canadians):** Visa on arrival or e-visa for Canadians (~$50 USD)
- **Tipping:** 10%; $5–10/day for drivers and guides

## Where to stay

- **Stone Town** — The UNESCO old town — carved doors, the night food market at Forodhani, the slave-trade memorial, rooftop bars at sunset. Emerson on Hurumzi, Park Hyatt, Kisiwa House. — best for: 1–2 nights of culture at the start or end
- **Nungwi & Kendwa (north)** — The only coast with all-day swimming — no big tides — plus the island’s liveliest beach bars and the Zuri and Royal Zanzibar resorts. Sunsets face west. — best for: swimmers, first-timers, sunsets
- **Matemwe & Mnemba (northeast)** — A quiet white beach facing Mnemba atoll — the best snorkelling and diving, Matemwe Lodge, Zanzibar White Sand, and Mnemba Island Lodge itself (one of Africa’s great hideaways). — best for: honeymoons, divers, luxury
- **Paje & Jambiani (southeast)** — Kitesurfing capital on huge tidal flats, seaweed farms at low tide, boho beach lodges and the more local village feel. — best for: kiters, budget-boutique, a slower vibe
- **Bwejuu & Michamvi (east)** — Long, empty, palm-backed beaches with the big-name resorts (Baraza, The Palms, Xanadu) and The Rock restaurant on its tidal boulder. — best for: resort weeks, families, The Rock photo

## Food and drink

- **Forodhani Gardens night market** (Stone Town) — Grilled seafood skewers, Zanzibar pizza (a stuffed crepe), sugarcane juice with ginger, on the waterfront every evening. ~$5–10. Go hungry, bargain gently.
- **Emerson on Hurumzi Tea House** (Stone Town) — A multi-course Swahili dinner on cushions on a rooftop above the old town, with the call to prayer at sunset. ~$40–50/person. Book ahead; one seating.
- **The Rock** (Michamvi (Pingwe)) — The restaurant on a rock in the sea — wade or boat across depending on the tide. Seafood, ~$40–60/person. Book for the view; lunch is the better light.
- **Lukmaan** (Stone Town) — Canteen-style Swahili cooking where locals eat — pilau, biryani, octopus curry, fresh juice. ~$5–8. The best cheap lunch on the island.
- **Spice farm lunch** (Kizimbani / Kidichi) — Tour a spice plantation (cloves, vanilla, cardamom, the “lipstick tree”) then eat a pilau cooked with what you just picked. ~$25–40/person with the tour.

## Day trips

- **Mnemba atoll snorkel** (30 min by boat from Matemwe or Nungwi (half day)) — Dhow or speedboat to the protected reef around Mnemba — turtles, dolphins most mornings, coral gardens in clear water. The island’s best sea day.
- **Spice tour & Jozani Forest** (30–45 min from Stone Town (full day)) — A spice plantation walk in the morning, then the red colobus monkeys (found nowhere else) in Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park and the mangrove boardwalk.
- **Prison Island & sandbank** (20 min by boat from Stone Town (half day)) — Boat from Stone Town to Changuu’s giant tortoises and old prison, then a sandbank picnic and swim at Nakupenda.
- **Safari Blue** (From Fumba, southwest coast (full day)) — A full-day traditional dhow trip from Fumba — snorkelling, a seafood feast on a sandbank, dolphins, and sailing through the mangrove lagoon at Kwale.

## Common mistakes

- **Booking the east coast for swimming:** Low tide pulls the sea out a kilometre twice a day on the east. Beautiful, but if you want to swim whenever you like, stay north at Nungwi or Kendwa.
- **Skipping Stone Town:** One or two nights in the old town — the market, the doors, the rooftop dinner — is what makes Zanzibar more than a beach. Do it at the start.
- **Dressing for the beach in town:** Zanzibar is conservative and Muslim. Shoulders and knees covered in Stone Town and villages; swimwear only on the beach and at the resort.
- **Coming in April:** The long rains (March–May) are heavy. June–October or December–February are the months to book.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where should I stay in Zanzibar?

One or two nights in Stone Town, then the north (Nungwi/Kendwa) for all-day swimming or the northeast (Matemwe) for Mnemba and the quietest luxury. The east coast is beautiful but tidal.

### Can I combine Zanzibar with a safari?

That’s the classic trip — a week in the Serengeti or the Masai Mara, then a direct bush-to-beach flight to Zanzibar for four or five nights. June–October lines up both perfectly.

### When is the best time to visit?

June to October for cool, dry weather; December to February for hot, dry diving season. Avoid the March–May long rains.

### Is Zanzibar good for a honeymoon?

Excellent — Mnemba Island, Xanadu, Zuri and The Residence are among Africa’s most romantic stays, at prices well below the Maldives or Seychelles.
