Cape Town Travel Planning & Itineraries

The most physically spectacular city on Earth. A flat-topped mountain rising 1,000m above a city wedged between two oceans, vineyards 30 minutes away, penguins on the beach. Politically complex, culturally rich, ridiculously good value with the Canadian dollar. Six nights minimum — three in the city, three on the Cape Peninsula or Winelands. Africa''s easiest first trip.

Our AI planner helps you pace your Cape Town days, pick the right neighbourhoods, and build a route that makes sense.

Planning Your Cape Town Trip

Best Time to Visit

November–March is summer (high season — book ahead). September–October is whale-watching season + wildflowers. April–May is autumn — best weather, lower prices. Winter (June–August) is rainy and cool but humpback whales arrive — and Cape Town''s "season of the cellars" wine events run. Avoid late December–early January peak (locals on holiday too).

Budget Overview

Budget: $50–90 USD/day (guesthouse in Sea Point, market lunches, MyCiti bus). The exchange rate makes this Africa''s best-value destination. Mid-range: $170–290 USD/day (boutique in De Waterkant, Table Mountain cable car, Cape Peninsula tour). Luxury: $700+ USD/day (Ellerman House, One&Only, Mount Nelson, Cape Grace, private guides, helicopter tours).

Getting There

Fly into Cape Town International (CPT) — direct from JFK on Delta or via European hubs from YYZ (16–20h total). From CPT: MyCiti bus to city centre R110 in 35 min, Uber R280–350 in 25 min. Pre-arrange hotel transfer for night arrivals.

Getting Around

Uber + rental car. Uber works everywhere and is cheap and safe — locals use it constantly. Rent a car for Cape Peninsula + Winelands days (R450/day, drive on the LEFT). MyCiti bus covers the city + V&A but not Atlantic Seaboard well. Avoid metered taxis.

Common Cape Town planning mistakes

1

Climbing Table Mountain on a windy day

The cable car closes when winds exceed 60 km/h — happens often. Check tablemountain.net the morning of. Have flexibility — your first sunny calm morning is the day.

2

Walking around the city centre at night

Even safe neighbourhoods feel different after 9pm. Uber even for 5-block trips. The locals do; you should too.

3

Booking only Stellenbosch for Winelands

Franschhoek is smaller, prettier, with the Wine Tram (a hop-on-hop-off wine bus). Split nights or pick Franschhoek over Stellenbosch.

4

Visiting Boulders Beach without arriving early

By 11am the boardwalks are packed. Arrive 8:30am and you can have penguins to yourself.

Cape Town Travel FAQ

How many days do I need in Cape Town?

Six nights minimum: three in the city + three in the Winelands or Cape Peninsula. Add 3 more for a safari in Kruger or Phinda — Cape Town does not have big-game safari, you fly to that.

Is Cape Town safe?

Yes for tourists in tourist zones, but South Africa has high crime in absolute terms. Stay in safe neighbourhoods (Atlantic Seaboard, City Bowl, De Waterkant), use Uber, don't walk after dark, never display phones at traffic lights.

When do I climb Table Mountain?

First clear morning — book the cable car online to skip the queue. Hike up via Platteklip Gorge if fit (2.5h up). Wind closes the cable car often — have a backup day.

Cape Peninsula day trip route?

Camps Bay → Hout Bay → Chapman's Peak Drive → Cape Point + Cape of Good Hope → Boulders Beach (penguins) → return via Constantia. Full day with driver or rental car.

Can I combine Cape Town with safari?

Yes — fly internally to Kruger area (2h to Skukuza) or Phinda (KZN). Cape Town + 3-night safari is the classic combo. Budget $1,500+/night per person for a top safari lodge.
