Dubai Travel Planning & Itineraries

The most ambitious city on earth — a 50-year-old metropolis built on desert sand, where the tallest building in the world sits next to the largest mall in the world next to an indoor ski slope. Not a cultural destination, but unmatched for luxury hotels, beach clubs, and connecting flights. Best treated as a 3-4 day stopover between continents, not a standalone trip.

Our AI planner helps you pace your Dubai days, pick the right neighbourhoods, and build a route that makes sense.

Planning Your Dubai Trip

Best Time to Visit

November-March is the only time to visit — comfortable 22-28°C, low humidity, perfect beach weather. April is still bearable. May-October is the infamous summer — daytime temps 40-45°C, brutal humidity near the water. Hotels drop prices 60% in summer but most outdoor activities become impossible. Ramadan (dates shift yearly) closes most restaurants during daylight.

Budget Overview

Budget: $70-120 USD/day (budget hotel in Deira, shawarma + biryani meals at AED15-30, metro). Dubai has a surprising budget side if you stay off the Marina strip. Mid-range: $220-400 USD/day (4-star near Downtown, Burj Khalifa + Dubai Mall fountains, desert safari, beach club day). Luxury: $800+ USD/day (Burj Al Arab, Atlantis The Palm, Armani Hotel, helicopter tour, private yacht).

Getting There

Fly into Dubai International (DXB) — one of the world busiest hubs, 13 hours direct from YYZ on Emirates or Air Canada. DXB Metro Red Line reaches Downtown in 25 min (AED8).

Getting Around

Metro + Uber/Careem. The Red Line hits all major tourist stops (Burj Khalifa, Marina, JBR). Outside that, Uber/Careem is the way — cheap and air-conditioned. Do not walk anywhere in summer (April-October) — it's dangerous heat.

How many days do you need?

Most travellers spend 4 days in Dubai. Our AI planner generates a custom day-by-day itinerary based on your travel dates.

Common Dubai planning mistakes

1

Only seeing the malls and Marina

Old Dubai — Al Fahidi, Deira souks, abra boats on the Creek — is the most memorable half-day.

2

Ignoring summer heat

June to September means 45C+ days. Book indoor mornings and save beach time for sunset.

3

Dressing for the beach everywhere

Malls and heritage areas expect covered shoulders and knees. Stow a cover-up for in between.

4

Overlooking desert sunset

A well-run desert safari at sunset with a local operator beats a taller Burj Khalifa ticket any day.

Dubai Neighbourhoods

Downtown Dubai

The Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, fountains, and the city's most polished hotels. Best for first-timers who want icons within walking distance. Best for: first-timers, luxury travelers, stopovers.

Dubai Marina

The glittering high-rise canal district with JBR beach walk, yacht charters, and the best nightlife. Pedestrian-friendly and walkable. Best for: nightlife, beach days, couples.

Palm Jumeirah

The famous man-made palm island with Atlantis, beach resorts, and private villas. Isolated and car-dependent. Best for: honeymoons, beach-focused resort stays.

Jumeirah

Older low-rise beach neighbourhood with the Burj Al Arab and classic beach hotels. More relaxed than the high-rises. Best for: families, repeat visitors.

Deira / Old Dubai

The historic side with the gold and spice souks, Dubai Creek abras, and actual character. Skip as a base but essential as a half-day visit. Best for: culture seekers, photographers.

Business Bay

The newer downtown adjacent to the Burj Khalifa. Cheaper than Downtown, canal views, emerging restaurant scene. Best for: value-focused first-timers.

Dessert

Crispy dumplings drizzled with date syrup — Ramadan staple found year round at Emirati spots.

Dubai hosts global names — Zuma, La Petite Maison, Ossiano — plus homegrown talent like Orfali Bros.

Dubai Travel FAQ

How many days do I need in Dubai?

Three to four days is plenty. Day 1: Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall. Day 2: Old Dubai — gold souk, spice souk, abra across the creek. Day 3: beach day at your hotel or JBR. Day 4: desert safari at sunset. Dubai is a stopover city, not a week-long trip — 5+ days and you'll run out of things to do.

Is Dubai strict about alcohol and dress?

Less than the reputation. Alcohol is served in licensed hotel bars, restaurants, and beach clubs — you don't need a license anymore. Dress codes: cover shoulders and knees in public places and malls, swimwear only at beaches and pools. Ramadan is stricter — no public eating/drinking during daylight.

Is Dubai worth visiting in summer?

Only if the prices compensate. Hotels drop 60%+ and flights get cheap. You'll basically live between the hotel, the mall, and the car — outdoor sightseeing is physically impossible between 10am and 7pm. Summer works for pure resort vacations where you barely leave the property.

Should I do the desert safari?

Yes, but pay for the private/small-group version. The cheap mass-market safaris pack 60 people into buses with mediocre food and canned belly-dancing. Premium operators (Platinum Heritage is the benchmark) use vintage Land Rovers, give you a real Bedouin dinner, and skip the cheese.

Is Dubai family-friendly?

Extremely. It was built for it. Kid-friendly waterparks (Aquaventure, Wild Wadi), clean beaches, spotless hotels, Legoland, Motiongate. Everything is air-conditioned, everyone speaks English, and taxi rides are cheap. Probably the easiest international family trip from North America.
