Munich Travel Planning & Itineraries

Germany''s wealthiest, most conservative, most Bavarian city — and the easiest German city to fall for. Beer gardens under chestnut trees from May to September, BMW headquarters and the Alps both within an hour, and a Christmas market season that''s the country''s reference standard. Three days for the city, five if you''re using it as the base for Salzburg, Neuschwanstein, and a Garmisch Alps day.

Our AI planner helps you pace your Munich days, pick the right neighbourhoods, and build a route that makes sense.

Planning Your Munich Trip

Best Time to Visit

May–September is the long sweet spot — beer-garden weather. Oktoberfest runs late September to first weekend of October — book a year ahead. November–December is Christmas market season (Marienplatz market is the country''s best). January–April is cold and quiet — cheaper hotels, ski day trips. June–August can be hot (30°C); good Eisbach surf weather.

Budget Overview

Budget: $80–130 USD/day (pension in Schwabing, currywurst stand €5, U-Bahn day pass €9.20). Mid-range: $230–390 USD/day (4-star in Altstadt, Schweinshaxe dinner, Neuschwanstein day tour). Luxury: $800+ USD/day (Hotel Bayerischer Hof, Mandarin Oriental, Charles Hotel, private guides, suites with Alps view).

Getting There

Fly into Munich International (MUC) — direct from YYZ on Air Canada / Lufthansa (8h30). From MUC: S-Bahn S1 or S8 to Hauptbahnhof in 40–45 min for €13.50. Lufthansa Airport Bus to Hauptbahnhof in 45 min for €11.50.

Getting Around

U-Bahn + S-Bahn + tram + walk. Excellent MVV transit covers everywhere. A 24h pass is €9.20, 3-day group €34.40. Walk Altstadt + Englischer Garten. Rent bikes (Donkey, MVG) for the locals'' move. Uber works but is rare; taxis at ranks.

Common Munich planning mistakes

1

Going to Oktoberfest tents at 7pm

Most tents are full by 4pm. Arrive 9–11am for a table or have a reservation. Reservation-free walk-in works only on weekdays before 2pm.

2

Skipping Englischer Garten

At 3.7 sq km it's bigger than NYC's Central Park. Eisbach river surf (year-round!), nude sunbathing, four beer gardens, monopteros temple. A half-day minimum.

3

Visiting Neuschwanstein without booking castle entry

You can walk to the castle from Hohenschwangau village but interior tours sell out 6+ weeks ahead in summer.

4

Ordering Hefeweizen (wheat beer) in the afternoon

Bavarians drink Weißbier in the morning with Weißwurst, lager from lunch onward. Locals will not stop you — but they'll notice.

Munich Neighbourhoods

Altstadt (Old Town)

Inside the ring — Marienplatz, Frauenkirche, Viktualienmarkt. The first-timer base. Most central but touristy. — best for: first-timers, short trips

Schwabing

University quarter north of Altstadt — Leopoldstraße cafés, Englischer Garten access, Bohemian artistic legacy. — best for: longer stays, café crawls, design lovers

Glockenbachviertel

South of Altstadt — Munich's LGBTQ+ heart, hip cafés, design hotels (Flushing Meadows). Quieter at night. — best for: nightlife, design hotels, repeat visitors

Maxvorstadt

Museum district west of Altstadt — Pinakothek triangle, Kunstareal galleries. Walking distance to centre. — best for: art lovers, budget mid-range

Haidhausen

"Französisches Viertel" east of Isar — quiet residential, Maximilianeum, weekend Sunday brunch. — best for: families, slow travel, locals' Munich

Bogenhausen

Wealthy residential — Hilton Munich, walking distance to Englischer Garten north end. Quieter base. — best for: luxury, work + leisure

Munich Travel FAQ

How many days do I need in Munich?

Three days — one for Altstadt + beer gardens, one for museums + Englischer Garten, one for Nymphenburg + BMW Welt. Add 2 for Neuschwanstein + Salzburg day trips.

Do I need to book Oktoberfest tents?

For evening + weekend slots: yes, 6+ months ahead. For weekday morning, walk-in works (gates open 9am, claim a table). Beer is €13.50/litre. Lederhosen optional but locals wear them.

Munich or Berlin?

Berlin for edge + history + nightlife. Munich for beer culture + Alps + cleanliness. Different countries, basically. If you have a week: do both.

Neuschwanstein day-trip — bus tour or DIY?

DIY by train + bus is 4h each way + a stressful day. Bus tour ($60) drops you 5 min from the castle — easier. Either way: pre-book castle entry slot (€20).

Is Munich safe?

Among Europe's safer capitals. Standard pickpocket awareness in Marienplatz + Hauptbahnhof. Englischer Garten after dark: fine in summer, empty in winter.
