Argentina & Chile

Patagonia Travel Planning & Itineraries

The last great wilderness in the Americas. Glaciers calving into milky lakes, granite spires (Fitz Roy + Torres del Paine), guanacos and pumas on the steppe, the southernmost city in the world. Plan it as two anchor weeks — El Calafate + El Chaltén on the Argentine side, Torres del Paine on the Chilean side. Or pick one side for 7 nights. Don''t try to do both in 5 days; you''ll spend all of it in transit.

Our AI planner helps you pace your Patagonia days, pick the right neighbourhoods, and build a route that makes sense.

Planning Your Patagonia Trip

Best Time to Visit

November–March is the Patagonian summer — 12–22°C days, all trails open, ferry routes running. December–February is peak season — book everything 6 months ahead. April–October is winter: half the lodges close, Torres del Paine has limited access, El Chaltén''s big hikes are snowbound. The wind blows year-round (gusts to 100 km/h on peak days).

Budget Overview

Budget: $130–230 USD/day (refugios in Torres del Paine, bus transfers, self-catering). Patagonia has no real budget tier — even hostels run $80/night. Mid-range: $400–700 USD/day (Hosteria Las Torres, Hotel El Calafate, guided hikes, glacier trek). Luxury: $1,800+ USD/day (Awasi Patagonia, Tierra Patagonia, Explora Patagonia, Eolo, private guides + transfers).

Getting There

Fly to Buenos Aires (EZE) or Santiago (SCL). Connect: BA → El Calafate (FTE) is 3h on Aerolíneas Argentinas. Santiago → Puerto Natales (PNT) is 4h on LATAM/Sky. From FTE to El Chaltén: 3h drive. From PNT to Torres del Paine: 2h drive.

Getting Around

Rental car + transfers. Renting in El Calafate gives flexibility for Perito Moreno + El Chaltén. Inside Torres del Paine, hotels handle transfers. Cross-border bus from El Calafate to Puerto Natales (BusSur) takes 5h. Internal flights save days vs driving.

Common Patagonia planning mistakes

1

Trying to do both Argentine + Chilean sides in 5 days

You'll spend 3 days in transit. Either 10+ days for both, or pick one side for a focused 6–7 day trip.

2

Skipping wind preparation

Patagonia winds gust to 100 km/h. Hooded shell jacket + buff + sunglasses are not optional. Hikes near lakes get sandblasted on bad days.

3

Booking refugios less than 4 months ahead

Torres del Paine refugios on the W book up by September for peak season. Reservar Vertice + Las Torres are the operators.

4

Renting a small car

Patagonia roads are gravel for long stretches + windy. Rent an SUV with insurance — flat tires from gravel are common.

Patagonia Neighbourhoods

El Calafate (Argentina)

Gateway town for Perito Moreno glacier. Comfortable infrastructure, FTE airport, base for southern Argentine Patagonia. — best for: first-timers, families, comfortable bases

El Chaltén (Argentina)

Trekking capital — base for Fitz Roy + Cerro Torre. 3h drive from El Calafate. Tiny town, big trails. — best for: hikers, photographers, adventure-first trips

Puerto Natales (Chile)

Gateway to Torres del Paine — has the airport (PNT) for the Chilean side. 2h south of the park. Real working town. — best for: Torres del Paine base, mid-range

Torres del Paine (Chile)

Inside the park — Explora, Tierra Patagonia, Awasi resorts plus the famous refugios. Wake up inside the magic. — best for: splurge stays, multi-day trekkers

Ushuaia (Argentina)

"End of the World" — the southernmost city. Beagle Channel boat trips, Tierra del Fuego National Park, gateway to Antarctica cruises. — best for: Antarctic cruise visitors, photographers

Bariloche / Lake District

Northern Argentine Patagonia — alpine + lakes (think Swiss-meets-Argentine). Ski in winter. Easier mountain views without the El Chaltén commitment. — best for: families, ski trips, easier Patagonia

Patagonia Travel FAQ

How many days do I need in Patagonia?

Ten days is the realistic minimum — 4 nights El Calafate + El Chaltén, 4 nights Torres del Paine, 2 nights transit. Two weeks is the sweet spot. Five days = mostly travel days.

Argentine or Chilean side?

Both are best. Argentine side for the iconic glaciers (Perito Moreno) + Fitz Roy hike. Chilean side for the W-trek + the famous granite towers. If you must pick one: Argentina is easier first-time, Chile is more dramatic.

Do I have to hike the W in Torres del Paine?

No — most visitors do day hikes from a base hotel. The full W (5 days) is the iconic trek. Base Las Torres is a hard day hike anyone fit can do. French Valley is the prettiest day.

Argentina or Chile entry — any catch?

Crossing the border at Cerro Castillo is a 2-3h ordeal. Most operators handle it for you. Don't carry fresh produce or meat — strict customs both directions.

Is December–February really that crowded?

For the iconic trails, yes — but Patagonia is so vast you'll feel alone five minutes off-trail. Book hotels + refugios 4–6 months ahead in peak. Off-shoulder (Nov / Mar): same magic, half the lodges.
