Seoul Travel Planning & Itineraries

The most surprising big-city trip in Asia. 25 million people in the metro area, transit that runs like Tokyo, food that''s having a generational moment, and the world''s best beauty industry — all wrapped around 600-year-old palaces and Bukhansan mountain hiking inside the city limits. Three full days, four with a Suwon or DMZ day. Cheaper than Tokyo, friendlier than Beijing, more interesting than people expect.

Our AI planner helps you pace your Seoul days, pick the right neighbourhoods, and build a route that makes sense.

Planning Your Seoul Trip

Best Time to Visit

Late March–May (cherry blossoms) and September–November (autumn colours) are the magic windows. June–August is humid + monsoon (afternoon downpours). December–February is cold (-5 to 5°C) but the cheapest + Christmas-lit Myeong-dong is spectacular. Cherry blossom dates around April 5–15; Yeouido Park is the peak spot.

Budget Overview

Budget: $50–90 USD/day (hostel in Hongdae, street food $2–5, T-money subway). Mid-range: $160–280 USD/day (boutique in Bukchon, Korean BBQ dinners, DMZ tour). Luxury: $650+ USD/day (Shilla Hotel, Four Seasons, Park Hyatt, Hotel Lotte Suites, Michelin tastings, custom skincare clinics).

Getting There

Fly into Incheon (ICN) — direct from YYZ on Air Canada / Korean Air (13h). From ICN: AREX Express train to Seoul Station in 43 min for KRW 11,000. AREX All-Stop in 1h for KRW 4,750. Airport limousine bus to most major hotels KRW 18,000.

Getting Around

Subway + T-money. Seoul has 23 metro lines + 99% English signage + the world''s best transit app (Naver Maps or Subway Korea). T-money card (KRW 4,000) tap-on for all transit including buses. Walk Bukchon + central palaces. Uber works (Kakao T is the local app), cheap.

Common Seoul planning mistakes

1

Skipping the palace changing of guards

Gyeongbokgung does it at 10am and 2pm — colourful, photogenic, free. Most visitors miss it because they arrive at 11am.

2

Tipping at restaurants

It's not customary and can be awkward. The price you see is the price you pay. Round up cabs only.

3

Visiting in late July–August

Monsoon humidity + afternoon downpours. Plan indoor activities (museums, palaces) for afternoons.

4

Not learning the metro app

Naver Maps (English version available) is essential — it shows live train times + exit numbers, which matter for big stations. Don't use Google Maps in Korea; it doesn't work properly.

Seoul Travel FAQ

How many days do I need in Seoul?

Three full days minimum — one for Gyeongbokgung + Bukchon, one for Gangnam + Han River, one for Hongdae + DMZ. Add 2 for Busan or Jeju trips.

Should I do a DMZ tour?

Yes — the Joint Security Area tour (only one operator, Tour DMZ) takes you into the actual North-South negotiating room. $80, half-day, book 6 weeks ahead. Standard DMZ tours skip the JSA.

Is Korean BBQ worth the hype?

Yes. Mapo Galbi or Yeontabal in Mapo for pork belly. Maple Tree House in Itaewon for premium beef. The waitstaff cooks at your table; you don't self-grill. $25–60/person.

Tokyo or Seoul first?

Tokyo for first-time Asia (more iconic, more polished, more English signage). Seoul for second visit — cheaper, edgier, the food scene's having a moment. Combine on one trip if you have 14+ days.

Best skincare experience?

Lush Plastic Surgery for cosmetic procedures (medical tourism), Olive Young for retail skincare, Sulwhasoo or O Hui flagship stores in Gangnam for traditional Korean treatments. Standalone facials at Spa 1899.
