Overview
Ten days is enough for a real first-time Thailand if you fly between regions and skip the "see everything" trap. This itinerary does Bangkok (3 nights), Chiang Mai (3 nights), and Krabi or Phuket area (3 nights), with one travel day between each. We've cut Phang Nga, Phi Phi, and the long-tail Chiang Rai trip — they're great, but they don't fit in 10 days without a forced march. You'll do street food tours in Bangkok, an ethical elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai (Elephant Nature Park, not the riding ones), and a beach finish that lets you actually relax. Built for first-time visitors, couples, and adventure travellers — works for solo or small groups. Skip if you're going for the full moon parties (different itinerary entirely). Best months: November-February (dry, cool, peak season — book ahead). March-May is hot. June-October is rainy season; deals are great but expect afternoon downpours.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should we add Phuket or skip the islands?
Don't skip the islands — the trip needs the contrast. We recommend Krabi/Railay over Phuket (less developed, fewer crowds, more striking landscape). Phuket works if you want resort luxury or a direct international flight. Avoid Patong if you want anything resembling peace.
What about Chiang Rai?
Beautiful (the White Temple is iconic), but it's a separate trip. Chiang Rai is 3-4 hours from Chiang Mai and deserves 1-2 nights minimum. Doesn't fit in a 10-day Thailand without skipping Bangkok or the islands. Save for a return trip.
Do we really need to fly between regions?
Yes — Bangkok to Chiang Mai is 14+ hours by train or bus, and Chiang Mai to the islands is even longer. Internal flights are CAD $80-150 and save you 2 entire days. Book on Thai Smile, Bangkok Airways, or AirAsia.
When's the best time for Thailand?
November to February is peak season — dry, cool, perfect. March-May is brutally hot (40°C+). June-October is rainy season — daily afternoon downpours, but cheaper hotels and fewer crowds. Avoid the islands in October (heaviest rain).
Is Thailand expensive?
It's one of the best value destinations in the world. A couple can do this entire 10-day trip for CAD $2,500-4,500 excluding flights — including internal flights, mid-range hotels, all meals (mostly street food), and a few activities. Add 50% if you want luxury resorts.
How safe is Thailand?
Very safe for tourists. Common-sense rules — don't drink obvious tap water, don't ride scooters drunk, watch your drink in nightlife areas. Bangkok scams (gem store, tuk-tuk tours, 'temple is closed') target tourists; just say no firmly. Real safety risks are road accidents (don't rent scooters).
What about Elephant Nature Park — is it ethical?
Yes — it's a rescue sanctuary, not a riding camp. Elephants come from logging, circus, and trekking abuse. You feed and bathe them; they're never made to perform. It's the gold standard for ethical elephant tourism. Book direct via elephantnaturepark.org, not third parties.
Do we need any vaccines?
Routine vaccines should be current (MMR, tetanus). Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended. Japanese Encephalitis only for long rural stays. No malaria prophylaxis needed for the standard tourist route. Check with a Toronto travel clinic 4-6 weeks before departure.
