Belize Travel Planning & Itineraries
By Bobby Atwal, TICO-registered travel advisor (Fora Travel), Toronto · Updated
Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America and the one with the Caribbean's second-largest barrier reef right offshore — which means snorkelling with nurse sharks at Hol Chan, diving the Great Blue Hole, and sleeping in overwater bungalows on the cayes, all with Maya temples and jungle lodges two hours inland. It's laid-back, small (400,000 people), safe in the tourist areas, and perfect for the trip that wants both reef and rainforest without a long-haul flight.

Planning Your Belize Trip
Best Time to Visit
Late November to April is the dry season — 26–30°C, sunny, calm seas, the best reef visibility (February–April is clearest). December–January and March break are peak and pricey on Ambergris Caye. May is the sweet spot: hot, dry, whale sharks at Gladden Spit (April–June), and rates dropping. June to November is the wet and hurricane season — short afternoon downpours, lush jungle, 30–40% off, with September–October the riskiest months. The cayes are drier than the interior.
Budget Overview
Budget: $90–140 USD/day (a Caye Caulker guesthouse, rice-and-beans lunches, water taxis). Mid-range: $280–450/day (a 4-star on Ambergris Caye like Victoria House or a jungle lodge like Chaa Creek, a snorkel trip, a Maya site tour). Luxury: $800–2,000+/day (Cayo Espanto, Turtle Inn, Blancaneaux Lodge, Alaia, Itz’ana — where small-lodge relationships and advisor perks matter). The split-stay (jungle + reef) adds a domestic flight (~$100–150) but is the trip.
Getting There
Fly into Philip Goldson (BZE) in Belize City — nonstop from Toronto (YYZ) on WestJet and Air Canada (~4.5h, seasonal, mainly winter), or via Miami, Houston or Dallas year-round. From BZE: a 15-minute Tropic Air or Maya Island Air hop to San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) or Placencia, a 20-min flight to Caye Caulker, or a 2-hour drive west to the Cayo jungle lodges. Water taxis also run to the cayes from Belize City (45–90 min).
Getting Around
Domestic flights connect everything in 15–30 minutes. On the cayes: golf carts and bicycles — no cars on Caye Caulker. In Cayo: lodges arrange transfers and tours; a rental car works for confident drivers (right-hand side, decent paved highways, rough side roads). Placencia: a golf cart or the lodge shuttle. Avoid driving in Belize City; it’s not a tourist stop.
Common Belize planning mistakes
Doing only the cayes
The Maya sites, the ATM cave and the jungle lodges are the half that makes Belize different. Split the week: 3 nights Cayo, 4 nights on the water.
Spending time in Belize City
It’s a transit point with real safety issues outside the tourist zone. Land and fly or boat straight out.
Expecting wide beaches on the cayes
Ambergris and Caulker have narrow sand and sea grass; you swim off docks. For a real beach, stay in Placencia or Hopkins.
Booking the Blue Hole dive without the certification
It’s a deep, dark, advanced dive. Non-divers should take the flight over it instead — arguably the better view anyway.
Belize Neighbourhoods
Ambergris Caye — San Pedro
The main island and the busiest: golf-cart streets, beach bars, Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley minutes away, resorts from Victoria House to Alaia. — best for: first-timers, snorkellers, nightlife, families
Caye Caulker
The barefoot backpacker island — “Go Slow” signs, the Split for swimming, reggae and lobster, no cars. Cheaper and more relaxed than San Pedro. — best for: budget travellers, couples who want simple
Placencia
A 16-mile peninsula in the south with the mainland’s best beaches, Turtle Inn and Itz’ana, whale sharks at Gladden Spit, and the Garifuna village of Seine Bight. — best for: beach-and-jungle combos, whale sharks, luxury
Cayo — San Ignacio
The jungle interior: Xunantunich and Caracol Maya temples, the ATM cave, Mountain Pine Ridge, river lodges (Chaa Creek, Blancaneaux, Ka’ana). — best for: adventure, Maya history, the jungle half
Private cayes
Cayo Espanto, Thatch Caye, Ray Caye, Coco Plum — one resort, one island, overwater bungalows and your own stretch of reef. — best for: honeymoons, buy-outs, total escape

Belize Travel FAQ
Where should I stay in Belize?
Split it: a jungle lodge in Cayo for Maya sites and the ATM cave, then Ambergris Caye or Placencia for the reef. Honeymoons add a private caye. Skip Belize City entirely.
Is Belize safe?
The tourist areas — the cayes, Placencia, Cayo — are safe with normal precautions. Belize City has crime issues; treat it as a transit point only.
When is the best time to go?
Late November to April for dry weather and reef visibility; May for whale sharks and lower rates. June–November is wetter and cheaper.
Is it good for families?
Very — English-speaking, short flights, calm reef snorkelling, golf carts, Maya temples kids can climb, and jungle lodges with real adventure. One of the best Central American family trips.
