Jamaica Travel Planning & Itineraries

By Bobby Atwal, TICO-registered travel advisor (Fora Travel), Toronto · Updated

Jamaica is the Caribbean with a pulse — reggae drifting out of every doorway, jerk smoke on the roadside, Blue Mountain coffee at breakfast, and the kind of warm, unhurried hospitality the all-inclusive brochures never quite capture. It's also one of the easiest winter-sun trips from Canada: 4 hours nonstop to Montego Bay, then a resort strip for every budget from Negril's cliffs to Ocho Rios's gardens. Pick your coast carefully — that one decision shapes the whole trip.

Free advisor planning includes Fora Reserve hotel perks at no extra cost — or use our AI planner to pace your Jamaica days, pick the right neighbourhoods, and build a route that makes sense.

Planning Your Jamaica Trip

Best Time to Visit

Mid-December to April is peak — dry, sunny, mid-80s°F, and the busiest, priciest window (Christmas and March break book out months ahead). May to early June is the sweet spot: same weather, 20–30% off, and resorts half-empty. July–August is hot and humid but fine for families on school break. September–October is the heart of hurricane season — cheapest rates, highest risk; buy insurance and stay flexible. Sea temperature is warm year-round.

Budget Overview

Budget: $120–180 USD/day (a guesthouse or 3-star in Negril, jerk-shack meals, route taxis). Mid-range: $300–500/day (a 4-star all-inclusive in Montego Bay or Ocho Rios, one excursion). Luxury: $900+/day (Round Hill, Half Moon, GoldenEye, Jamaica Inn — the properties where the perks through an advisor actually matter). All-inclusives dominate the market; a well-chosen one is genuinely good value for families.

Getting There

Fly into Montego Bay (MBJ) — nonstop from Toronto (YYZ) on Air Canada, WestJet and Sunwing (~4h), and seasonal from Montreal and Calgary. MBJ is 10–20 min to the Montego Bay resort strip, ~90 min to Negril, ~2h to Ocho Rios. Kingston (KIN) only makes sense for the Blue Mountains or Port Antonio. Pre-book a private transfer or use your resort's shuttle — the highway is good but the driving culture is not for nervous first-timers.

Getting Around

Private transfers and resort shuttles for most travellers — distances between coasts are longer than they look. Route taxis (red plates) are cheap and local, fine for short hops in Negril. Rental cars work if you're confident driving on the left on fast, unmarked roads — otherwise hire a driver for the day (~$150–200), which is how most advisor clients do Blue Hole, YS Falls or a south-coast run.

Common Jamaica planning mistakes

1

Booking Negril from Montego Bay and expecting a short hop

It’s 90 minutes each way on a two-lane road. Pick one coast as a base; don’t try to “do” Negril from an Ocho Rios all-inclusive.

2

Treating every all-inclusive as equal

Quality varies enormously, especially food. The gap between a 3.5-star and a Sandals or Half Moon is real — this is exactly where an advisor earns their keep.

3

Never leaving the resort

Jamaica’s best moments — jerk at a roadside pit, a river swim, a fishing village lunch — are outside the gates. Book at least one day with a private driver.

4

Hitting Dunn’s River at 11am

Cruise-ship groups arrive mid-morning and the falls become a conga line. Be there at 8:30 opening, or go to Blue Hole instead.

Jamaica Neighbourhoods

Negril — Seven Mile Beach

A long, low-key beach of boutique hotels and beach bars, with the famous West End cliffs (Rick’s Café, cliff-jumping) a short drive away. The most relaxed, independent-traveller vibe on the island. — best for: couples, beach loungers, sunset chasers

Montego Bay — Rose Hall & Hopewell

The grand resort coast: Half Moon, Round Hill, the Hyatt Zilara/Ziva and Hilton Rose Hall, all 15–30 min from the airport. Polished, golf-heavy, no transfer fatigue. — best for: families, short trips, luxury resort weeks

Ocho Rios

Gardens, waterfalls and river adventures — Dunn’s River Falls, Blue Hole, Mystic Mountain. Big all-inclusives (Sandals, Moon Palace) plus the old-money Jamaica Inn. — best for: active families, first-timers who want excursions

Port Antonio

The lush, rainy, deeply green northeast — Frenchman’s Cove, the Blue Lagoon, bamboo rafting on the Rio Grande, and tiny luxury hideaways (Geejam, Trident). Far from everything, and that’s the point. — best for: honeymoons, repeat visitors, anyone allergic to resort strips

Treasure Beach (South Coast)

Fishing villages, black-sand coves and Jakes, the island’s most charming small hotel. No all-inclusives, no cruise ships, incredible food. — best for: slow travel, writers, couples who want the real thing

Jamaica Food & Drink

Scotchies

Montego Bay / Ocho Rios

The definitive jerk — pork and chicken smoked over pimento wood under a zinc roof, served with festival and breadfruit. ~$12–18/person. Go for lunch; no reservations.

Rick’s Café

Negril West End

Touristy, yes — but the cliff divers at sunset are a spectacle. Go for one rum punch and the view, eat elsewhere. Arrive 90 min before sundown for a railing spot.

Miss T’s Kitchen

Ocho Rios

Home-style Jamaican in a bright garden setting — oxtail, curry goat, ackee and saltfish, done properly. ~$20–30/person. The lunch locals send you to.

The Sugar Mill at Half Moon

Montego Bay

Fine dining in an 18th-century sugar mill under the stars — the island’s most romantic table. ~$80–110/person. Jackets not required, but dress up. Book ahead.

Pelican Bar

South Coast (Treasure Beach)

A driftwood shack on stilts a mile out to sea, reached by boat from Treasure Beach. Red Stripe, fried fish, nothing else needed. ~$30/person with the boat.

Day Trips from Jamaica

Blue Hole & Dunn’s River Falls

From Ocho Rios: 20–30 min each (full day with a driver)

The two Ocho Rios waterfalls in one day — climb Dunn’s River early (before the cruise crowds), then swing and jump into the turquoise pools of Blue Hole (Island Gully) in the afternoon.

YS Falls & Appleton Estate

~90 min from Negril or Montego Bay

A south-coast day: the seven-tier YS Falls with rope swings and a jungle setting, then a rum tour and tasting at Appleton Estate. The best non-beach day on the island.

Blue Mountains

~1h from Kingston; 3h+ from the north coast

Coffee-farm tours, cool mountain air and the Strawberry Hill lodge — the only cold-ish place in Jamaica. Worth an overnight if you’re flying through Kingston.

Luminous Lagoon

35 min from Montego Bay (evening)

Bioluminescent bay at Falmouth — swim in water that glows blue when you move. Best on moonless nights; a 30–45 min boat tour.

Jamaica Travel FAQ

Which part of Jamaica should I stay in?

Montego Bay for easy airport access and big resorts, Negril for a laid-back beach-bar vibe, Ocho Rios for waterfalls and family excursions, Port Antonio or Treasure Beach for a quieter, more local Jamaica. Splitting a week across two coasts works well.

Is Jamaica safe for tourists?

Resort areas and the main tourist towns are well-policed and the vast majority of trips are trouble-free. Use common sense: private transfers rather than hailing cabs at night, keep valuables in the safe, and avoid walking unlit roads. Kingston needs more care than the north coast.

All-inclusive or not?

For families and first-timers, a good all-inclusive takes the friction out. Couples and food-lovers often prefer a boutique hotel in Negril, Port Antonio or Treasure Beach and eating out. Either way, the property matters more than the model.

How many days do I need?

Seven nights lets you do one coast properly plus a south-coast day trip. Five is fine for a single-resort escape. Ten lets you split Negril and Port Antonio, which is the trip I’d plan for a honeymoon.
