Mauritius Travel Planning & Itineraries

By Bobby Atwal, TICO-registered travel advisor (Fora Travel), Toronto · Updated

Mauritius is the Indian Ocean's great all-rounder — a volcanic island ringed by reef, so the lagoons are calm, turquoise and swimmable all the way round, backed by sugar cane, rainforest and the green pinnacles of Le Morne. The resorts (One&Only Le Saint Géran, Four Seasons at Anahita, LUX*, Constance, Shangri-La Le Touessrok) are among the best beach hotels anywhere, and the island itself — Creole, Indian, Chinese and French at once — has real food, real towns and real culture behind the beach. It's the honeymoon that also works for families.

Planning Your Mauritius Trip

Best Time to Visit

May to December is the dry, cooler season — 24–29°C by day, low humidity, calm seas on the west and north coasts; September to November is the sweet spot for weather, whale season and value. December to April is hot, humid and the cyclone window (January–March carry the most risk), though it’s also peak for Christmas and the Chinese and Indian holidays. June–August is “winter”: 22–25°C, breezy on the east coast, perfect on the west. Water is 23–28°C all year.

Budget Overview

Budget: $150–220 USD/day (a guesthouse in Grand Baie or Flic en Flac, street dholl puri, buses). Mid-range: $400–650/day (a 4-star beach resort on half board, a rental car for two days, a catamaran trip). Luxury: $1,000–2,500+/day (One&Only, Four Seasons, Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Royal Palm, LUX* Belle Mare — where advisor rates and perks are substantial). Many resorts price half or full board, which makes the daily cost predictable.

Getting There

No nonstops from Canada. The best routings are YYZ → Paris (CDG) on Air Canada or Air France then Air France or Air Mauritius to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (MRU) (~11h), or YYZ → Dubai (DXB) on Emirates then DXB–MRU (~6.5h). Total travel is 20–24 hours; a Dubai or Paris stopover night is sensible and turns the trip into two holidays. MRU is in the southeast: 45–75 min to most resorts by private transfer.

Getting Around

Resort transfers for arrival; a rental car for exploring. Driving is on the left, roads are decent, and the island is 65 km long — Chamarel, the Black River Gorges, Le Morne and the markets of Port Louis are all easy half-days. Taxis are negotiable and reasonable for single excursions (~$60–100/half day); resorts arrange drivers. Buses are cheap but slow.

Common Mauritius planning mistakes

1

Booking the east coast in July

The trade winds make Belle Mare breezy and the lagoon choppy June–August. For winter trips, stay west or north and visit the east for a day.

2

Never leaving the resort

Mauritius has a real culture — markets, temples, Creole kitchens, rum, rainforest. Hire a driver for one full day at least.

3

Ignoring the flight time

It’s 20+ hours from Toronto. Build a stopover night in Dubai or Paris, and plan 10 nights minimum so the journey is worth it.

4

Not asking about meal plans

Half board at a good resort often beats à la carte for value, and some resorts bundle excursions. An advisor compares the real cost, not the rack rate.

Mauritius Neighbourhoods

East coast — Belle Mare & Trou d’Eau Douce

Long white beaches, the widest lagoon and the resort royalty: One&Only Le Saint Géran, Four Seasons Anahita, Constance Belle Mare Plage, Shangri-La Le Touessrok. Breezier June–August. — best for: honeymoons, luxury weeks, golf

West coast — Flic en Flac & Tamarin

Calm, sunny, sheltered from the trade winds — the best winter-season choice. Dolphin trips at dawn, surf at Tamarin, Le Morne views. LUX* Le Morne and Sugar Beach are here. — best for: families, June–August, swimmers

North — Grand Baie & Mont Choisy

The island’s lively hub: restaurants, shopping, boats to the northern islets, and a long sandy beach at Mont Choisy. Royal Palm and Trou aux Biches resorts. — best for: couples who want to leave the resort, nightlife, value

Southwest — Le Morne & Bel Ombre

The UNESCO mountain, kitesurfing on a world-class lagoon, and the quiet southern resorts (Heritage, Shanti Maurice, JW Marriott). Wild and scenic. — best for: kiters, nature, dramatic views

Chamarel & the interior

Not a stay — the rum distillery, the Seven Coloured Earths, the Black River Gorges rainforest and Ganga Talao’s crater-lake temple. — best for: a full day away from the beach

Mauritius Food & Drink

Le Chamarel Restaurant

Chamarel

A terrace high above the southwest coast with Creole cooking — palm-heart salad, octopus curry, venison. ~$45–65/person. Lunch with the view is the point.

Chez Rosy

Gris Gris (south coast)

Family-run Creole table near the dramatic south cliffs — fish vindaye, rougaille, rice and lentils. ~$20–30/person. The real thing.

Port Louis Central Market

Port Louis

Dholl puri (lentil flatbread) with chutney, alouda (iced milk and basil seeds), tropical fruit. ~$5. Go mid-morning on a weekday.

Le Capitaine

Grand Baie

Seafront seafood classic — grilled lobster, sea urchins in season, Mauritian-Chinese dishes. ~$40–60/person.

PRIME at One&Only Le Saint Géran

Belle Mare

The resort’s steak-and-seafood grill under the stars — the special night of an east-coast week. ~$110–150/person. Non-guests can book.

Day Trips from Mauritius

Île aux Cerfs

20 min by boat from the east coast

A sandbar island off the east coast with shallow lagoons, parasailing and a beach barbecue. Arrive by catamaran from Trou d’Eau Douce; go early before the day-boats.

Chamarel, Black River Gorges & Le Morne

Full day by car or driver from the west

The Seven Coloured Earths, the Chamarel waterfall and rum distillery, a rainforest viewpoint, then the Le Morne beach at sunset. The island’s best inland day.

Dolphin swim at Tamarin Bay

Early morning from Black River (3h)

Dawn boat to swim alongside wild spinner dolphins off the west coast, often with humpback whales offshore July–November.

Northern islets

Full day from Grand Baie

Catamaran to Coin de Mire, Flat Island and Gabriel Island — snorkelling, a barbecue lunch, and some of the clearest water around the island.

Mauritius Travel FAQ

When is the best time to visit Mauritius?

May to December for dry, mild weather; September to November is the sweet spot. Avoid January–March if you want to minimise cyclone risk. Pick the west coast in June–August to dodge the trade winds.

How do I get there from Canada?

Via Paris on Air France/Air Mauritius or via Dubai on Emirates — about 20–24 hours door to door. A stopover night is worth it, and your advisor can build it in.

Mauritius or the Maldives?

Maldives for pure overwater, one-island-one-resort isolation. Mauritius for beaches plus mountains, towns, food and things to do — and it’s better for families and longer stays.

Is it good for a honeymoon?

One of the best in the world. The east-coast resorts are built for it, and the island gives you a week of beach and a few days of exploring without ever feeling resort-bound.
