For most visitors, Sukhumvit is the best area to stay in Bangkok — excellent BTS Skytrain access, hundreds of hotel options from mid-range to luxury, and the city's best international restaurant strip. The Riverside district is the choice for iconic luxury properties and the timeless Chao Phraya experience. Silom/Sathorn sits in between: connected, cosmopolitan, and well-priced.

Bangkok is one of the most hotel-rich cities on earth, which makes the choice paradoxically harder. Every district has its own rhythm — Sukhumvit runs fast, the Riverside runs slow and grand, the Old City is ancient and chaotic in the best way. Getting the base right makes the rest of the trip. Already decided? Submit a travel inquiry and I will handle the booking with Fora perks where available.
Riverside (Chao Phraya)
The most storied part of Bangkok for hotel stays — the stretch of the Chao Phraya River that has attracted the city's most celebrated properties for over a hundred years. Life here moves at a different pace from the rest of Bangkok: hotel boats, river views from breakfast, and a grandeur that Sukhumvit cannot replicate. The BTS is not on your doorstep, but the hotels run shuttle boats and tuk-tuks, and the MRT and BTS are 15–20 minutes by hotel transfer.
Best for: luxury travellers, honeymoons, and anyone who wants Bangkok's most iconic hotel experience. Not ideal if you plan to be out exploring independently every evening.
Hotels to consider:
- Mandarin Oriental Bangkok (Leading Hotels of the World, Fora preferred) — one of the oldest and most celebrated hotels in Asia, on the Chao Phraya since 1876. The Authors' Wing suites carry literary history in every detail. Through Fora, guests receive daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade on arrival, and a hotel credit per stay.
- Peninsula Bangkok (Fora preferred) — directly across the river from the Oriental, with spectacular Chao Phraya views from most rooms and one of the best river-facing pools in Bangkok. Fora guests receive daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade, and a hotel credit.
- Capella Bangkok (Fora preferred) — the newest addition to the Riverside luxury belt, with just 101 residences and an intimacy the larger properties cannot match. Fora guests receive daily breakfast, a room upgrade, and a hotel credit.
- Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River (Fora preferred) — two dramatic towers connected by a sky bridge, with the city's most spectacular rooftop pools. Fora guests receive daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade, and a hotel credit.
Sukhumvit
Bangkok's most international neighbourhood and the most practical base for the widest range of travellers. The BTS Skytrain runs the length of the road — Nana, Asok, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo, and Ekkamai are the key stations — giving you fast, air-conditioned access to every major attraction. The restaurant and nightlife density is unmatched anywhere in the city.
Best for: first-timers, solo travellers, business visitors, and anyone who wants maximum flexibility and access without being tied to a hotel shuttle.
Hotels to consider:
- JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok (Sukhumvit Soi 2) — a reliable five-star with large rooms, a well-regarded Sunday brunch, and central Sukhumvit positioning that keeps everything accessible.
- Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit — directly above Asok BTS, with one of Bangkok's most useful pools and consistent reviews for service and room quality.
- Sindhorn Kempinski Bangkok — a newer addition near Lumpini Park at the western end of Sukhumvit; quieter than the main strip with a park-facing position and strong spa.
Silom & Sathorn
Bangkok's financial district — towers, embassies, and the BTS Sala Daeng station at the top of the road — but also one of its most surprisingly liveable neighbourhoods. The night market on Patpong is here, Lumpini Park is a 10-minute walk, and the restaurant-to-dollar ratio is among the best in central Bangkok. Connected to both the BTS and the MRT.
Best for: business travellers, couples who want central access and value, and travellers who appreciate the mix of local and international that the neighbourhood delivers.
Hotels to consider:
- W Bangkok (Sathorn) — a style-forward property near the BTS with a striking rooftop pool and strong food-and-beverage programming that draws Bangkok residents as much as hotel guests.
- SO/Bangkok — on Lumpini Park's edge, with design-led rooms, a rooftop bar, and the kind of personality that cookie-cutter five-stars rarely achieve.
Ratchadamri & Ploenchit (Near Central Park & Lumpini)
The quieter, more residential-feeling corridor between Silom and Sukhumvit — good shopping (Central World, Gaysorn, EmQuartier within reach), Lumpini Park for early-morning runs, and some of Bangkok's most discreet luxury hotel addresses. Connected by BTS Ratchadamri and Chidlom stations.
Best for: upscale leisure travellers who want luxury amenities without Sukhumvit's noise and density, and those who want the best shopping access.
Hotels to consider:
- Rosewood Bangkok (Rosewood, Fora preferred) — a dramatic 30-storey tower on Ploenchit Road with exceptional food-and-beverage across multiple venues and the most talked-about bar programme in Bangkok. Through Fora, guests receive daily breakfast for two, a room upgrade on arrival, and a hotel credit per stay.
- Anantara Siam Bangkok — a long-established Thai luxury property on Ratchadamri with ornate gardens, exceptional traditional Thai spa treatments, and a warm service culture.
Old City (Rattanakosin & Banglamphu)
The ancient heart of Bangkok, where the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun cluster within walking distance of each other. The Khao San Road backpacker strip is here too — loud, cheap, and fun in its own way. Accommodation ranges from guesthouses and boutique hotels to a handful of characterful small properties; the area is not where the city's luxury stays are.
Best for: budget-conscious travellers, those visiting primarily for the temples, and travellers who want the most historically-rooted part of Bangkok as their base.
Hotels to consider:
- Sala Rattanakosin — a small, beautifully positioned boutique hotel directly on the Chao Phraya, with rooftop views of Wat Arun across the river and an intimate scale that the Riverside's large hotels cannot offer.
- Chakrabongse Villas — a historic Thai-European estate on the riverside, converted into a handful of private villas; the most atmospheric accommodation in the Old City for those who want genuine character over convenience.
